Hello,

i try to play ja2 under Windows 8.1. It's not listed under compatible OS but I've tried it anyway.
It works but it run incredible slow. The problem occurs on my laptop (Thinkpad X220, i5 with Intel HD) and my desktop (Phenom 2 with Geforce 460GTX).
I don't think that there is a driver problem. The hardware should be fast enough too.

Is there a way to speed things up? Everything else is fine: no glitches, freezes and crashes it's just extreme slomo.

Try this mod - JA 2 v1.13
I tried, now the game doesn't start at all. I've only tested on my laptop so far, tomorrow I check the Desktop.

Does it run slow all the time, or just in the tactical part? Try turning the merc lighs off (default key G) and see if it helps.

As for the 1.13 patch, there should be a windows 8 patch included in the documents subfolder, and you may also need to disable the intro in the ja2.ini

Now that you've downloaded 1.13, open the Docs folder from the main game directory. There you should find another folder named Windows Compatibility fixes, and there you should find a zip file called Windows 8 Fix. Unzip it.

In there, you'll find files ddraw.dll, libwine.dll, and wine3d.dll. All you have to do now is copy those three files into the main game directory, and you'll be good to go.

HOWEVER, I'm not sure if you'll find these in the "official" 1.13 release (4870). I'm pretty certain they'll be in the unofficial "unstable revisions", since that's what I'm currently using.

I can confirm: The official 4870 release and official 4870 patch do not have the Win8 fix (downloaded today).

If you need ddraw.dll, libwine.dl, and wined3d.dll, you can get it from www.nongnu.org/wined3d/

The download file is an exe, but you can open it as an archive using 7zip or any other zip program. Copy the files you need to the JA2 install directory and youll be golden.

You rock man. You rock!
Much appreciated.
Hi.

I encountered similar problem with GOG vanilla JA2 1.12 (NOT 1.13), although game isn't particularly stuttering: it rather, eh, runs slowly flowing. This problem is relevant only to tactical screen, other windows work OK. Furthermore, it's most annoying in real-time mode: merc's running animation reminds slow-motion video. Not VERY slow, and it's still playable, but I'd really like them to move faster. During turn-based tactical combat game runs smoother, and mercs run fast when I order them to.

Is it an issue or it's just how the game works?

P.S. I use Windows 10.
P.P.S. I've already tried pasting ddraw.dll, libwine.dll, and wine3d.dll. Looks like that didn't make much effect.

I am too having this problem as a Win 10 user. I hope some kind of Win 10 patch can be made for this classic so it will continue to live on Win 10 and beyond...
I managed to solve the problem with adding aforementioned WINE libraries into game folder. Just try older version of .dll's.
I had this problem (tactical game runs very slow/stuttery) with the Steam Gold version, copied to another folder and patched up to 1.13.

Most of these fixes resulted in it running all messed up in a window (half-width and everything purple)

I managed to fix it using the various advice above. I made a number of changes but I think the changes most likely to have been the ones that made it work were

- Setting the ja2.exe to XP SP3 Compatible (I had it on the earliest possible setting... 98 or something)
- Setting both the INI launcher (provided by the patch) and the game to run as Admin
copying files from Win8 fix helped me finally

I just Got this game again and having the same problem wondering if you found the fix?
Same to me. Where did you get the right files?

I've tried a couple of Wine versions without any success.

EDIT:
The solution was with Win 10 to use Wine 1.1.38

Now JA2 Vanilla is running fine :-)
