I get that there are art, soundtrack, etc goodies.

But as a game, are there any differences?

Has there been any "GOG Magic" compatibility work done, to make this run with less hiccups on modern (win7x64) systems than the Steam version?

Thanks!

Its DRM free, and you get extra goodies (like the sound track} like all GOG games, like you said. Also, the Config menu does not crash for me on Win 7/8, unlike the Steam version and on my rig there is less stutter.

But does it come with the rare Rhino Demon add-on? or is it compatible with the Rhino Demon add-on cd?

Rare ? I thought that the Rhino Demon Transformation content was present in every version of the game and that it was just a matter of enabling it by editing a singe line of text in a text file.
Maybe that's true. The preorder installation disk itself is rare.

What is the file to edit, and what do you do?

File to edit is ar_town.2da - MAKE A BACKUP OF THIS FILE BEFORE EDITING IT (just in case you mess up the edit)

Use Wordpad to edit line 35 from

after_chapter_screen **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** +j00c_master_c1

to

after_chapter_screen **** **** **** **** **** j00_lti_rhino **** **** **** **** **** **** +j00c_master_c1

You need to start a new game to get the content since the rhino 'bonus' content kicks in right after the tutorial fight.
So in other words it should be easy enough for GOG to edit the file themselves, and have it built into the installation download?
Why should gog go the trouble of repackaging a new installer for something as trivial as this ?

Besides, the content sitting in your hard drive is yours to modify or hack as you please since it's for your personnal use, if GOG were to do it you'd have to factor in distribution - and that's where relatively simple things tend to get complicated and messy real fast.

Edit: typos

I played this for a few minutes and it actually ran without crashing unlike the steam version.

You'e welcome.

Nope, i don't really need it, but i'm mildly curious to find out if the forums will implode when someone reaches 9999 ;)

The Steam version actually comes with the soundtrack as well.

Unless I'm mistaken, every PC version of Jade Empire has it enabled and it was only the original X-Box release that needed a pre-order disc.
Nah, the Rhino demon bonus was only included in preorder of the pc version (but its easy to edit the game files to activate it).

A special edition on Xbox netted you the Monk, and his special staff weapon.

The monk became a regular character on the PC version. Although his staff was left out I think. But you can find mods that put it back in somewhat (more of a graphic change than actual version of the fighting style).

There are probably also contract issues with GoG doing this, because this is such special preorder content. Unless their agreement specifically covers this, GoG is probably wise to err on the side of not going through legal shenanigans.
