Here's my new Splash.exe, containing a CPU Patch (DDraw Wrapper by Aqrit) and a 3DFX Wrapper. These things will be installed automatically unless they are.

Download: bit.ly/19FT41R

Just copy (or download) the Splash.exe in your Interstate '76 and\or Nitro Riders game directory, same file works for both.

Cheers

Mr.Blade: Here's my new Splash.exe...
I appreciate the effort you put into this. It worked for me...a little.

To be clear, it doesn't seem to work for regular I76, but it does work for Nitro except that it crashes anytime a mission ends (I think it happens when the resolution changes to go back to the main menu). When it works it looks fantastic though: 3Dfx mode at 1920x1200 is nice!

I'm still testing, so I'll report back if I get it working right.

EDIT: I got both of them working, but they still crash whenever a mission ends. The most annoying part is that once you see how the game looks at high resolution, it's hard to go back.

Does this new 'splash.exe' allow for higher resolutions?

It certainly does for me. I've got both I76 and the Nitro Pack running at 1920x1200 in Glide mode, which looks great.

My only problem is that the game crashes whenever a mission ends, and that makes it hard to do the storyline. In fairness I haven't had a chance to work on solving that problem for a couple of days. It may still be fixable. I don't blame Mr.Blade for the crashing; it's a damn buggy game to try and run on a newer system.

It doesn't for me. Stuck at 640x480.

Only in software mode I can crank it up a bit. But not past the original resolutions.

Any idea what I could try, or what I missed? Some kind of .ini? Or such.

I have this game installed on my legacy rig. It being Win Xp.

Me too. I'm using my XP setup.

I don't really have any suggestions, unfortunately. Not beyond reading the help posts on the forum extensively. Most people have trouble with the game in one way or another, and I'm not sure there's any discernible pattern to it.

When using splash.exe, ingame settings will show 640x480 always. Solution is (for me) to use nGlide properly, i.e. to setup nGlide to my desired resolution (1680x1050) a replace glide.dll and glide2x.dll from game directory. Then choose 3dfx in splash launcher. Game will start with rotating 3dfx logo. Menus are in lower resolution, but game itself runs in resolution chosen in nGlide...

The only problem is that game crashes every time when switching game mode to menus (end of mission, abort mission...), same as for UniversalWolf. Any is help appreciated....

Ok. Thanx all.
Will try.

Would hate to miss playing this awesome funky game in hi-res.
Using splash.exe, I can play either 640*480 (original glide.dll and glide2x.dll) which is better than D3D and everything works.

OR I can play hi-res (removed both .dll) with AA and smooth graphics BUT game crashes everytime when ending mission (without save).

It is sad, tasting the possibilities but be unable to enjoy them :-(
I don't know what's going on, but probably since the newest version of the AMD graphics drivers, the color fixes in Software Mode seem not to work anymore. At least for me.

Furthermore, the Direct3D Mode does simply not work with AMD graphics cards. There is no solution.

For the 3dfx-Mode you'll need nGlide, it works pretty fine, although the menu could be messed up if you don't launch with the "Enhanced Color Fix".

I honestly can't reproduce the glitch where the game crashes after a mission.

By the way, in Software Mode all weapons should work fine as it used to be, thanks to the Frame Limiter of aqrit's ddraw Wrapper. Actually it's the only mode where the game works glitchless.

I suspect it's connected to the screen resolution change when the game tries to return to the main menu.

Anyway, I don't blame you. Your splash.exe is the only way I've gotten I76 to run at high resolution AND in Glide mode at the same time, so good job on that.

Prior to crash (e.g. when aborting mission), mouse isn't working in menus (pointer looks like standard windows pointer, not I'76 "pencil"). Menus can be navigated only via keyboard and leaving "ingame" menus to main menu results in crash. This problem occurs every time when original glide.dll and glide2x.dll from game directory are removed (no matter what resolution - even in 640*480)

Anyway - my big thanks. splash.exe make the game playable and in slightly better graphics than original GOG, even in 640*480...
After lots of whining, and going as far as creating a whole thread on the subject, I suddenly realize this sticky thread and, oh, my god, did I facepalm hard! Like I said before, I'm not the most computer/tech savvy guy out there, and I'm not particularly good with complicated fixes to video game and computer program glitches and issues, so this launcher really made things easier for me.

There are still a few graphical hiccups when I run the games, but at least the wobbly wheels glitch is taken care of, which makes the game playable. I can live with my wheels turning black or becoming a fire sprite/tile whenever I fire the weapon, because now the games are fluid and the races finally feel like races and not waiting games. Plus, those graphic glitches are minor and happen rarely, I don't think I'll waste any time whatsoever trying to fix them, as they are far from being game-breaking.

As always, thanks to the amazeballs GOG community for helping each other solving whichever problems we have with our games. It's stuff like this that makes me proud to be a part of this fine community. Also, a big thank you to GOG themselves, for making these superb games available and making them run on our modern machines and OSes, even though at times an "Interstate '76" comes along, I still know they did everything in their power to make it compatible with what they were given. For the record, Interstate '76 is the only GOG game, out of the 79 I own, that I had any problem with.

[EDIT] I'm so sorry for the people out there who haven't been able to get this game running properly, even with the launcher... I don't know if it helps, but I'm running a pretty old laptop with Windows Vista 32-bit Home Edition, a 1.9 GHz AMD Turion processor that came with an "up to 896 MB" ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 HyperMemory and 2 GB DDR2. I downloaded the 2.0 version of the launcher with all the Glide stuff and I disable AVG whenever playing the games.

Made it work. And it's awesome. The skies are movie fast but couldn't care less.

Kudos for the helping hand.
