So, I've always wanted to get a full IQ score in Fate of Atlantis. Back when I originally played it, I was able to get everything except the fights that have alternate, non-combat ways of beating them (essentially, where you can use the environment to beat Nazis instead of punching them out). Eventually, after many many tries, I WAS able to beat all of those in combat except Arnold, but that was on a much slower computer. Now that I'm playing the game again, I'm wondering if it's literally impossible to beat these fights- everything moves so much faster that there's literally no time to react.
Is there a way to slow the game down? Has anyone beaten any of these extra-hard fights where the game gives you an alternate way out (I think there are four of them, three under Crete in the Fists path and one guarding the Atlantean dungeon)?
Can you save during fight? Maybe little save scuming could help.

That's exactly how I managed to get full points - saved the game every time I got a good couple of punches in without taking damage and reloading when necessary. It isn't pretty but it gets the job done!

I tried to do that, but it didn't seem to work. I can save right before the fight, but during the fight it doesn't seem to let me. How did you do it?
EDIT: To be more specific, it refuses to access the menu when I hit F5 and saving using Alt 0-9 also doesn't work.

Sorry to post twice in a row, but I'd really like to get an answer and the person I asked apparently doesn't exist any more (their profile page just shows up as blank). Has ANYONE been able to save their game mid-fight? If so, HOW?

You cannot, at least with the current ScummVM version.

You can force the menu to appear with CTRL+F5, but save and load options are disabled.

That's what I thought- and I actually did mess around with trying different versions to see if it was possible in an earlier one. No luck. It seems really weird that Shantih1 would just straight-up lie about a solution, but I don't know what else to think at this point. Guess that perfect Indy Quotient score will be forever out of reach.

That's cute. Let's not get frustrated and start posting libelous comments.

It's been a long time since I played Fate of Atlantis using ScummVM and it did absolutely work for me back in the day (there's no way I could have beaten Arnold in a fist fight and a achieved a perfect IQ score without it!)

Sorry it doesn't work anymore!
Older versions of ScummVM are all available at the official site: https://downloads.scummvm.org/frs/scummvm/

Feel free to try and let us know how it goes. Just take into account that if they truly disabled it in later versions, there must have been a reason

Hey, I did say it seemed weird! I tried several older versions of ScummVM but maybe I didn't go back far enough? Thanks for trying to help, and sorry if I got a bit snippy.

Sorry for necro-ing this thread. If you're still interested in slowing the game down, use Dosbox to run the game. In the dosbox config file under the CPU section, leave cycles=auto. If that's too slow for you, set cpu cycles to "fixed 4000" (without the quotes.) I have mine set to "fixed 5250." Contrary to many posts I've seen, Dosbox does play the voices in this game. If cpu cycles is set above 10000, then the game won't play the voices. If you need more help setting Dosbox up, let me know.

This is a little tricky with the GOG installation of Fate of Atlantis. I eventually got it to run by moving a few files around, but it refuses to recognize my old save files, even when I move them to the directory it expects them to be in. I'm assuming it's because they're SCUMMVM files and not DOSBox. Is there any way to convert back and forth between the two, or transfer IQ point totals from one to the other?

EDIT: I actually did find a way to slow SCUMMVM down, using a program that lets you adjust the speed of any application. Using that, I was eventually able to beat Hans (the slab guy), though the prison guard is still pretty much untouchable. I also tried to beat Arnold without using it, and miraculously came VERY close on about the second try, getting him down to yellow. Then my luck ran out and two dozen attempts later, I still could barely put a dent in him. Sigh.

Unfortunately, the SCUMMVM save files are not compatible with the original game save files that are produced when using DOSBox. The original game also makes a file called "IQ-POINT" and places it in the root of what you designated C:\ to be in DOSBox. I don't know if SCUMMVM makes the same file to save your IQ point totals. I prefer to use DOSBox since you get a much closer original game experience compared to SCUMMVM.

I finally ended up finding another solution: using ScummVM's debug mode by hitting ctrl-alt-D, you can change Indy's health with the command "scumm_vars[322] ###", where ### is the number you want to enter for the health value. Yes, it's just plain cheating, but considering I've been trying to get a perfect IQ score in this game since I was ten years old, I'm not too broken up about it!

Actually, back then I thought, in my endless optimism, that getting the full 1000 points would unlock a secret version of the game. I'd seen a screenshot on the back of the box that showed some inventory items not in the game (I think one was what appeared to be a shark tooth necklace), and, too young and ignorant to realize that they'd just used a screenshot from an unfinished build, assumed that there must be a secret "second quest" sort of thing with alternate puzzles. What can I say, it was a simpler time.

May I ask...how did you figure out which variable was the health variable? My reason for asking, I'm trying to do the same thing for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and the fights in the castle to clear out all of the guards. I want to see if I can actually leave with Henry if I defeat all of the guards in the castle, but it's pretty difficult to do.

Alternatively, what program did you use to slow down ScummVM in order to fight at a slower speed?
