I've been playing through the game using the default game settings (didn't even touch them, actually), getting as far as Palawan Lagoon, only to just now realize that my Indy Quotient or IQ score in the Game Statistics menu had been inexplicably lowered due to 'Difficulty Penalties'.

What's even weirder is the inconsistent manner in which these penalties have been doled out: I received a penalty of 4 for Chapter 1 (Canyonlands), 20 for Chapters 2-4, and 6 for Chapter 5 (Palawan Lagoon). Once again, I don't seem to remember ever having fiddled around with the Game Settings menu (or even having opened it, for that matter).

I'm not entirely sure what could have caused this. I remember that I initially changed the resolution from the default to 1920x1080 (16:9) and then to 1280x1024 (4:3) because the game clearly wasn't designed for a widescreen aspect ratio. I've also been exploiting the Quicksave function pretty heavily, which might have something to do with it. Finally, I've also been frequently alt-tabbing away from the game executable to skim through a walkthrough in order find every treasure. I don't see how any of these actions could possibly effect the game in the manner I just described, but at this point I'm stuck for answers, so I figured I'd mention them in the hopes of finding a solution.

I probably should have noticed something was awry once I'd finished the first chapter with a less than perfect score, but it was late at night and I was tired, so whatever.

FYI, I've been playing the game via the GOG Galaxy client on a laptop running Windows 8.1 (64-bit).

I seem to recall that you get penalized the more you pause or save the game for whatever reason, but get bonuses for just going through a level without saving or stopping--including alt tabbing out.

That's very odd, as I remember playing through the retail version of the game earlier this year and receiving no penalties at all, no matter how much I quicksaved or alt-tabbed. The manual also clearly states that you will only ever receive penalties to your IQ score by reducing the game's difficulty and/or using the in-game hint system.

EDIT: I also neglected to mention that I played the retail version of the game using this 64-bit installer (https://www.replaying.de/files/indiana-jones-5-patch-windows-xp-vista-7-x64/), which includes the 1.2 patch plus some other fixes, as well as dgVoodoo 2. I also played it with the subtitles switched off, which appear to be switched on by default in the GOG release. I'm sure how any of these additional factors may have caused or contributed to my current problems with the game, but I'd thought I'd mention them all the same, if only to help eliminate any possible explanations or avenues for investigation.

Well, I guess maybe I was thinking of another game.
You get penalties also for using map. More you using it more IQ score you lose.

I never even toggled the map function when I played it, retail or GOG. Maybe something went wrong in this area?

I'm getting the exact same penalties.

My guess is that the default "Senior" difficulty is what's causing it.
I think you're supposed to play the entire game in the hardest difficulty, "Dr. Jones", to avoid these penalties.

So there's a theory, now all we need is someone to test it out, because:

a) I don't like playing games in the hardest difficult setting. I beat Rocket Knight Adventures ONCE, when I was a kid, and I still hate the game to this day, because it forced me to play on hard. I don't want this to happen with other games.
2) I don't really care about the IQ thing, didn't care in Last Crusade, either. It's a high score in a narrative-driven game.
