Have you tried reinstalling it, or updating your drivers?
I had the same thing happen the first time I tried to fire it up while ago and came across this post while I was searching. My problem was quickly fixed but I couldn't believe what caused it. I came across a post on another site that said the problem was caused by the gaming headset they were using and when it was unplugged the game started fine. I just happened to be using a headset and tried firing up the game with it unplugged and it started up beautifully. Even ran at 1920x1080. Hope that helps.
That fixed it for me as well. Thanks!
I only have my Speakers plugged in no headset.
also will not start for me on Any setting

I've tried every variation of 16 bit to 32 bit...every resolution from highest to lowest and everything in between...and of course I tried the default setting

crashes on startup each & every time...cannot get to the loading screen

...and yes, I've unplugged my (non-gaming) headset

so I am open to anything before contacting gog to say the game won't play and Id like my money back

anyone know?

i have same problem, please post the fix for this GOG
So I have been playing email tag with gog and so far no luck, but for others it might help to make sure directplay is enabled. I'm still really hoping gog can help me find a fix.
Tested on 2 windows 10 machines with 2 different headsets.
Void Pro wireless and Vengeance 2100 wireless.
When I unplug the usb dongle the game works for me.
I guess we are not supposed to use wireless headset with this game.
I did send GOG support ticket about my issue hope the look into it.

So I still can't run it even with no headset plugged in. I can say older games are really weird and when i had a razer headset years ago and tried playing some old games they would crash when it was plugged in.

This is unrelated to headsets for me. I've unplugged my headset and still get crash on start new game from the launcher every time. If I can't find a solution soon, I will be asking for a refund.
I have two external bluray drives, headset, and a USB mouse connected to my rig, and the game runs perfectly fine.

First trying running it in its native resolution.

Typically it's a driver issue. If your drivers are up to date, then make sure you have DirectX 11, since this game's exectuable was probably configured with that in mind since its on GOG now.

Sometimes you also need to update your sound drivers. Some of us still use a separate sound card, which means you need to check that those drivers, or your motherboard's sound drivers, are up to date. Even though you hear the whip or see the intro animation, there are issues with how the data is processed and converted to sound.
So fresh install of Windows 10 had the game working intermittently for awhile and now just launches to frozen black screen no mater what i do. i even installed another fresh Windows 10 instillation using the same drivers and now it won't operate at all. This game still seems like it is not ready yet to play on modern OS and i would highly recommend not to buy it till something is figured out.
