I've got a strange problem with EoC:
Right after the installation the game runs perfectly fine (with compatibility mode set to Win XP), but the next time I want to play the game again (i.e. some time after I quit the game, or after a PC reboot), it simply won't launch. You just briefly see the loading icon next to the cursor, then it disappears and nothing happens. A quick glance into the Task-Manager shows, that loader.exe briefly loads but then closes again.

If I re-install EoC it will work again, but nevertheless after some time, this problem will occur again. I've already read the forum posts regarding AVAST Antivirus blocking some DLLs, but unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the problem here. There are no files quarantined. I also tried to switch off AVAST and Comodo Firewall, but with no success.

My operating system is Windows 7. I hope someone can help here :)
Thanks in advance!

Might be related to this, Issue with Compatibility Settings.

What installer version do you have?

Strange enough, there is no version number displayed in the library. But the installer still installs the game to C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\... by default, so I guess it's an older version (I already tried to change the install path directly to C:\GOG Games\.., but the problem still exists).

And regarding the compatibility setting issue, I'm not sure if I really understand it. I manually set the compatibility mode to Windows XP (SP3). But after reading the thread, maybe there's an issue with CCleaner? But I don't exactly know what. Perhaps I'll try to reinstall the game, then run CCleaner and see if the game still runs or not...

EDIT: Nope, it's not CCleaner. Just reinstalled the game, and ran CCleaner. Game is still "launchable", but the question is for how long. :)

That's normal for the older installers.

No, some of the GOG installers wipe out the compatibility settings on uninstall. If that's the problem this post appears to be the workaround.

Alright I set up the compatibility to all users as explained in the post, and so far the game is still launchable.
Thanks for your help Gydion! But if the problem still appears, I'll report again. :)

EDIT:
Ok, I finally found the actual reason behind this error, it's not the compatibility. Before I reinstalled the game I made a backup of the flux.ini, because I changed the FOV and used DirectX 8 as explained here. I didn't copy it back into the new installation until a few minutes ago (but not without making a backup of the "fresh" flux.ini).

And indeed, the game won't launch again. So I compared the two files, i.e. the backup flux.ini and the fresh flux.ini, and there were two lines which were automatically changed after I switched to DirectX 8:

graphics_device = dx8graph.fcGraphicsDeviceD3D
movie_device = binkmovie8.fcMovieDeviceBink

I changed them back to

graphics_device = dx7graph.fcGraphicsDeviceD3D
movie_device = binkmovie.fcMovieDeviceBink

and now it works again :D So I'll stick with DirectX 7 for now, I didn't notice a large difference anyway.
Anyway, thanks again for your help, Gydion.

Gydion: Next time mention that to begin with. ;) At least you have it sorted out.
Yeah sorry :D
I thought the change of the flux.ini would have nothing to do with my issue, as there are no problems whatsoever reported in the aforementioned thread. ;)

Yeah, the flux.ini is the Achiles' heel of this game. Whatever changes you make, always remember to back the file up first - or re-install the game a lot. ;-)
