Hi guys, firstly may I say a massive thanks in getting this game, I've wanted to play it ever since playing the amazing I-War 2, but I never thought I would be able to find a copy. :)
The game is playing fine, it's really, really hard though, even for a someone who played through Edge of Chaos several times!!! I've just got a question regarding the resolution the game runs at, I've managed to force AA and AF through my graphic cards control panel, and was wondering if there's any way I can change the resolution itself? (I'm aware the in game artwork will stay at the same resolution)
Thanks!!
The only resolutions the game supports natively are 640x480 and 800x600. You do that by creating a shortcut to iwar.exe and adding -b -16 to the command line along with -800x600 to enter 800x600 mode.
However instead you can force the game to display the actual 3D graphics (but not the hud and cockpit graphics) in much higher resolution by finding the file glide_wrapper.zbag.ini in your application data/appdata folder and setting the option high_res to 1.
Thanks!!! Just modified the glide wrapper as you suggest and it works perfectly, the game looks great considering its age!!
You've always been very helpful Stephen ;)
I don't get 800 x 600 when I use that command-line switch, nor does the glide wrapper thingy seem to make any difference I can detect. Could you explain a bit more what you mean? Thanks in advance.
Are you trying to get this working with the original campaign or defiance? if it's defiance you'll need to use the iwde.exe instead of iwar.exe.

Sorry for the unclarity; I'm trying to get this working with the original. At first I changed the Glide wrapper file as suggested, but I saw no difference. Then I tried creating the shortcut and adding the arguments, but every screenshot I take with FRAPS is still 640 x 480, which makes me think the resolution hasn't changed.
Does it sound like I'm doing something wrong? Thanks in advance.

It does sound strange. I don't know what could be going wrong. Are you sure you've got the parameters on the shortcut correct? They should go in the target line.
Here's mine, with some extra options to disable the startup movies and disc check:
"D:\Independence War Deluxe\IWar.exe" -b -16 -nologos -disk
Note, I'm not using 800x600 there, as I'm using the glide wrapper's high resolution mode.

I got it running at 800 x 600! I'm unclear as to whether it's using Glide or not, but it is definitely running at 800 x 600! The trick was to take exactly the command line arguments you provided and add the -800x600 argument as well. So the complete command line for the shortcut on my desktop is as follows:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Independence War Deluxe\IWar.exe" -b -16 -nologos -disk -800x600
Thanks for all the help! Now I'll have to scrounge up a joystick and see if I can get that working too. I like the game using the keyboard, but it has to be even better with a stick.

Glad to be of help!
A joystick is pretty much essential to get the best out of the game. My trusty favourite is a Saitek USB Gold, but that's got very loose in the stick-twist (it is over 10 years old!), so I'm currently using an old MS Sidewinder Precision 2.
At one point I used an entire CH Products HOTAS Stick, throttle and rudder pedal set. Unfortunately that's no longer compatible with modern PCs. :-(
