Never heard of this game, but holy hell, I love the concept!! Reminds me of the classic "Dr. Moreau" story!!

Alas, I suck with combat that is not turn-based. So how's the difficulty on this at its easiest setting? I might be able to still enjoy it (as I am currently with The Witcher on its lowest difficulty setting).

Also, how does the RTS element work as far as creating creatures and going to battle? I mean, will the creatures I've already released into the wild get slaughtered without my knowing it because I'm in my laboratory or something? Or do battles only take place when I'm ready to get out there with my troops?

The whole RTS thing, despite being around for a couple of decades, is new to me...but the concept of Impossible Creatures makes me want to give it a go!

1. There is no difficulty setting. It is purely incremental.

2. The battles only occur when you are on the field. If you're in a different screen or in the menus, the game is effectively paused. It also pauses on tab-out.

3. Maybe try a few skirmishes or playing the tutorial first. The game speed can also be adjusted.

The game starts pretty easy early on. Mid and late-game, you're gonna wanna make a gorilla/lobster combo, as that has the best cost/strength ratio, and that will be the core of your army for the rest of your game . Keep in mind those can only attack ground or water units, so you'll need some ranged critters for flying enemies, eel/giraffe or spitting cobra/giraffe are very good mixes.

But the campaign itself isn't really that hard, so you shouldn't have any troubles.

I love a good turn based combat system and wish more games used it, however there is a special place in my heart for RTS games as well. In a wierd way I think that having experience with turn based combat can actually make you a better RTS player. There are two basic parts to a good RTS, strategy and tactics. Strategy is your overall plan on how you are going to win, while tactics is the micromanagment of your units to utilize their maximum potential. Much of your turn based combat experience will translate over into deep RTS tactical play. The action happens at a faster rate, but the game mechanics are much simpler and units are easier to replace.

As far as the difficulty for Impossible Creatures goes, well I bought this game for my 7yr old son. He made it through the tutorial and the first several story missions completley by himself. The later missions required me either giving him advice or jumping in to help in some tense moments, but he does the rest himself. I actually haven't played much of the game myself but it seems to be much simpler than some other RTS games I've played.
I just got the shit kicked out of me on the volcano level. Over and over and over.

I guess that's when this game gets hard. :P

You may know this already, but just in case you don't:
1. The skunk's defensive cloud is very powerful vs ranged attackers, artilleries included (in Tellurian for sure, but afaik it is the same in the base game), which combined with ranged attacks of your own makes for a powerful combination vs Velika's fondness for artillery strikes and flyers.

2. When you pause the game ([PAUSE] key on the keyboard) you can still move around and issue orders, which helps a lot in micro-managing your base and units.

i'm trying to play in a way so i don't lose a single creature, building or henchman.
i'm now at mission 9, and this is where it got significantly harder for me.
a lot of waves of enemies early on, without much time or resources to build up something strong.
i'll probably figure it out after a few tries, though! it's a fun challenge for me :-)

one thing i really like about this as an RTS game is that you can pause the game and still give orders.
some might consider this in contradiction with the "real time" aspect of the genre, but to me it's just a way to get around my slow physical movement. i don't have the APM that competitive players have, though my decision-making skills are just fine, and the pause mechanic brings them together for me.


anyway, i don't think the game's very good, but i'm having a lot of fun nonetheless.
one thing that's a bit of a shame though is that a lot of creatures will see absolutely no use, simply because there are obvious upgrades. most active special abilities also do not really seem worth it, so far.


oh, and for anyone reading this who hasn't gotten very far yet, or has yet to start the game:
i've ran into a bunch of bugs that have to do with triggers..
sometimes when you complete an objective too early, or you complete an objective before you received it, something might fail to trigger (like a cut-scene, or the updating of an objective) and it can cause a soft lock. meaning that you can keep on playing, but you can not finish the level..
so, if you can help it, just follow the objectives as the developers had intended you to, or you might have to have to load an earlier save and re-do a whole bunch. saving often is also a good idea!
