ebaustin: Neither Imp 1 or Imp 2 are working in Windows 10. I've tried every available compatibility setting, with no luck. Anyone had success with these games and Win 10? Thanks.

JudasIscariot: Imperialism 2 should be fixed now in Windows 10. Please redownload the installer, make sure it has "2.1.0.5" in the filename, uninstall the game, and reinstall it using the new installer :)
Are there plans to get Imperialism 1 working in Windows 10? You guys had a post that was like "Nothing to worry about, your games will work in Windows 10." And then the first thing I try doesn't.......

Imperialism 1 works just fine on windows 10- you just have to rename winmm.dll to _winmm.dll. I don't get why gog says it's incompatible when the same fix works for both games.

I know you said it should work in Win10 now, but no luck. Now it tries to install DirectPlay, which fails. Microsoft says this code is deprecated and not allowed to run:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/games_windows_10/directplay-on-windows-10/d34f924c-63e6-48b9-919e-00f680713b19?auth=1

So, now what? Back to the coding table?

Oh yes, I did get the 2.1.0.5 installer :)

Any update on that? I get the same issue with Direct X and am not able to start the program. Any help is much appreciated!

Yeah, I've got the same problem here. Checked version, clicked it, said the update was to fix Win 10 compatibility issues. Guessing it's up to date.

...new problem? Looks just like the old problem though... :(
Okay...now it's working perfectly. What the heck?

The first time I let it install DirectPlay. It didn't work. I skipped it the next couple times. Didn't work. Checked the forum. Tried it again one last time. Let it install DirectPlay. It worked.

...like, seriously, what the hell?
I can't seem to get multiplayer to work on Windows 10, I had no problem with windows 7. Tried over a private network as well as internet (knowing IP address).
Found on another forum (works like a charm):
You need to activate DirectPlay for windows 10

1. Right click Start
2. Click Programs and Features
3. Click Turn Windows features on or off
4. Make sure there is a check in Legacy Components
5. Click the + to expand
6. Check the box for DirectPlay

Can confirm this method works.

Previously, I was having a problem with the aspect ratio, but that seems to have been fixed. Was there an update pertaining to this in the last 12 months or so?
I am getting the same problem. I installed the DIrectPlay as instructed, and made some progress. Now that it is running, I am getting errors. First, is a low disk space error (I have about 3TB free space, so that's not an issue). I choose to play anyway, and click OK.

Then get this screen as shown in the attachment.

I really want to play this game again. It holds lots of fond memories for me.

EDIT: I solved the problem. I installed a virtual CD. In this case, Alcohol 52%. It is commercial software, but I bought this many, many years ago. Came in handy, let me tell you. Full screen, sound, and everything.

To clarify why the virtual CD solves the issue: the game needs a cd/dvd drive for its sound, which allows you to 'fix' the issue by muting everything (I found this in another post regarding the _winCdPlay issue)

Would also like to add that on win 10 you don't need alcohol or other drive imaging software, just right click on an .iso file -> Mount and presto the PC has a DVD drive. It doesn't matter what .iso you mount for the game to work.

Thank you for posting about the DirectPlay. Had that checked but completely forgot about it.
Hey, sorry for being such a newb. This was one of my fondest memories growing up, and I relish playing the game again. I paid and downloaded from GOG and followed instructions I saw on this forum for troubleshooting, but I encounter the winCD issue. Hpw the hell do I create a .iso file I can mount which will let me play? (would be even cooler if it was the game's original soundtrack).

creating a real one is a different beast.....

What you could do:

Create a empty text file, rename the ending from .txt to .iso (for this you have to have the option enabled to see the file-extensions)

right click and mount it. Shall not matter that it will fail I think.

It is just about that stupid windows is getting tricked into thinking that you have a 'CD' drive on the system, which it will do in this moment, even as it fails to play the iso-file. It will add the registry and so on settings to the system, which are not there prior by default.

If this fails and you don't want to visit certain sites, you could also download the free virtual clone drive.

Goodaltgamer, thanks a ton. I got this to work seamlessly with the virtual clone drive. Help much appreciated.
