Nwn1 is the best RPG that i've played in my entire life. The unique flaws are the summon limit(i can't create an army of undead or constructs like helmed horror, note that hotu expansion increased the number of mercs but not summons), you can't give weapon to your mercs and the half implementations like for example you can't be a silver/blue/white/gold dragon disciple, get more CL leveling RDD and can't imbue a cold/eletric spell in your arrow as arcane archer(only imbue fireball and there are a lot of fire resistant/immune creatures). Played OC and expansions many times and a lot of custom modules. Despite this flaws, is the best RPG of my entire life.

Baldur's Gate, i liked the first, is a amazing game, played 2 times, one as solo sorc at max difficult, the second, i found the history too linear and disliked the dungeon layout but completed the second, only one time. This is only a mater of taste. I an not saying that bg2 is a bad game, only asking if the IWD is more "open"

Is IWD1/2 more similar to nwn or bg1 or to bg2? I personally prefer "role play" a character than a entire party, is more immersive IMHO.

I just finished IWD:EE yesterday and you may want to read my comment about it here . You can see the party I played with at the top.

IWD (and IWD2) are completely railroaded, linear hack & slash slug fests. They are not like any of the above, except for the fact that you have a party and the rules are based on D&D. Should you try it? Absolutely. Why not?
Just to add on to Hickory's post, IWD doesn't have any role play whatsoever. You create your party, you have your compaign and you slug your way to the end. There are side quests but nothing you can role play, you either do it or you don't.

However, if you like BG, I would still give IWD a try. Even people who prefer BG over IWD still had things to like in IWD.
I'm playing IWD now. It has the best artwork and atmosphere of any of the aforementioned RPGs imo. I've started over from the beginning now and am into the 2nd Chapter but I think I completed it on earlier save. Either way, from what I've seen IWD is excellent. BG2 was great but too overwhelming for me. I got exhausted by the end, put on story mode and just raced my through to the end of the game. I'd love to go back and do a proper play through. Siege of Dragonspear right through to Throne of Baal but IWD has really grabbed me.

I've really fallen for these RPGs. I have over 200hrs in Pillars of Eternity as well. IWD holds up pretty well even to the White March.
