I have tried:

- Running as Admin (it was already set to do this after installing)
- Running in Compatability Mode for XP Service Pack 3
- (from GOG support page) Run the setup-ddrawfix.exe file, found in the game's installation folder, and choose Force DirectDraw Emulation.
- (from GOG support page) Installed the June 2010 Direct X package

If I launch the game via GOG Galaxy the 'play' button greys out for a short bit and then becomes active again ... game never lauches.

If I launch the game via the shortcut in the install directory I get the following error message "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022). Click OK to close the application."

OS is Windows 10 Pro - Version 1703 - OS Build 15063.138

Almost certainly a security software interfering with startup. Disable your antivirus while playing, or change it to one that recognises legitimate programs.

Good thought but no dice, disabled antivirus and system firewall and still had the same result.

Well it's definitely an access issue, so either it's Windows security or you haven't got high enough privileges to run from that location. If you can't pin it down by deduction, I suggest using Process Monitor from Microsoft. Run the application (procmon.exe) and then try to start the game. Process Monitor will keep a log. Check it and find out what is really going on when the game tries to launch.
Just as a further note - This is the latest Creators update for Win 10, my wife is running the previous version (1607) and is not having the issue.

Enter the game's folder and move the file ddraw.dll out of there.
If the game starts, you can delete the file and forget about it.

Instead, if the game still doesn't start, move the file back to its original location and try enabling DirectPlay: open "Control Panel" and enter "Programs and Features", then choose "Turn Windows features on or off", check "DirectPlay" under "Legacy Components" and lastly click "Ok" (rebooting may be required).

This also worked for me, many thanks.

If anyone is having problems installing "DirectPlay" on Win 10 [it will download almost immediately if it is going to install properly] then you will need to disable Real Time Protection on Windows Defender and probably your anti-virus too. The update is coming from Microsoft direct so I guess this isn't a major issue...but of course, it's up to you.

The update takes 30 secs and then when installed, make sure to re-enable everything!

Worked like a boss! Thank you. Windows is such a crapfest anymore. Oi! Direct Play was the problem.
