I am a huge Ellison fan but I actually don't have a copy of this. As soon as a bought the game this morning I went on Amazon and bought a book with the story, more as a fan of Ellison than a gamer. What I'm curious about is how the game relates to the story. Obviously it would be vague at best but I was just curious, for shits and giggles.
The game is almost like a re-telling of the same premise. The story is told from the perspective of one of "the five" (who are not given nearly such distinct personalities or histories in the book) as he relates some of his experiences as AM's plaything as filtered through the narrator's own not-entirely-sane perceptions. Unlike the game, the book is not particularly concerned with who "the five" are or why AM chose them - the focus is more on the journey itself. The book's climax is also quite different from the game's, although I would argue that they both explore similar themes about individual choices in no-win scenarios.

It's a cool story, though - you're in for a treat.

Cool, thanks so much. As with everything else Ellison, I've come to expect a treat, regardless of if I totally understand it or not. :D
I love the story. Pretty disturbing and messed up. I love it!
Knowing the story, I bought the game. So I'm in for a treat! P:

I was the opposite! I saw this game listed on gog and thought it was an interesting and curious title, so I went and bought the short story collection and I LOVED the story.

Pretty morbid story for so little pages, but really gets you thinking about the 'no-win' scenario, and how no matter how hard we try, sometimes we just have to make due with what we have and live with the consequences of our actions.

How this relates to the story, it seems to me like I'd want to allow ALL the characters to die right away. hehe
I just read the book and man, do I love it. I have never read so much evil in so little pages. Even if it felt way too short, I really enjoyed it. Makes you think too.
To anyone who has both read the story and played the game, two questions.

1. What should I do first, play the game or read the story?
2. Which did you do first?

I'd read the story first but it's not a big deal. The story is only a few pages long; it only took me ten or so minutes to read. It won't help you win the game but you will immediately run to the game's title screen and compare the images of the characters to the descriptions of the characters in the story.

I would play the game for a bit first. The story is a fast read and all but its a lot less detailed and told from the point of view of just Ted instead of all five. The game actually makes the story alot more clear.

I played the game first, but since you can read the story in less than 10 minutes, I'd read it beforehand.
The story of the game isn't that related to the book (aside of being the same characters and AM and stuff :P) and focus more on every character. The story focus more on the idea and AM than on characters as individuals.

So, go for the book first!

While you're at it, read EVERYTHING by him. :D I'm not a huge sci-fi book fan (love movies) but Ellison is a god.
I think the short story is one of the very bests, it is certainly a must read, if you like sci-fi literature. It doesn't spoil the game, but the game spoils the original short story, even if there are many differences between them. So I recommend everyone to go with the "book" first , it is a really short story.
I just read the short story and I don't see what all the fuss is about. It's a decent tone-setting to start playing the game though. I almost feel like it's the kind of story that would belong in the game manual, as a means of introduction. It's short enough to fit inthere.
Have only started playing the game. There's a reference to the book when the canned food in the ice caverns is mentioned. Apart from the general setting, the character names and that reference there's not too much overlap though.
I'm just hoping the ending of the book didn't spoil the ending of the game. Wait and see I guess.
Highly recommended! You can get the story or from your game library. I'd also recommend Harlan Ellison's great reading [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vgc5PDtIii8]here.
