I got this game on a modern machine 6 years ago for the first time, and since then the performance has been so bad as to make the game unplayable. A few minutes ago i stumbled onto a crucial difference between my machine and people where it worked: They had only one monitor, while my machine had 2.

For me disabling one monitor made the game run perfectly.
