Hi!

I can not use community patch in Wine (on Linux). I can run the plain game (without community patch), but at start of any campaign mission, the game will crash with "Access Violation" I believe it is the cutscene which causes the crash, as I can load any saved game I've made before applying the patch - however one can not continue as I believe cutscenes are frequent (and can not be disabled, even if I wanted to. I believe they are quite essential to the story :-( )

This is just FYI, but any tips regarding what I might try to do to be able to use Community Patch are appreciated. I find it a bit odd it crashes at when there is supposed to be a cutscene, as this community patch should not touch them?

I had exactly the same error in Win10x64, initially--then I decided to reinstall the DX9.0c runtime, dated June 2010--DXSETUP.EXE is the file you want to run after decompressing the runtime to a folder (download it direct from Microsoft). What that does is install much earlier D3d/DX files alongside your D3d10/11/12 d3d files--they coexist happily, nothing is overwritten. Soon as I had reapplied my DX9.0c runtime--bang--the stock game & the 2..3 players patch worked admirably! I had recently installed a new build of Win10x64 Insiders recently and forgotten to reinstall DX9.0c afterwards--which I do each time I install a new build. Very nice--that first scene of the starship leaving the scaffolds puts a lump in my throat every time! It is absolutely majestic--a full fledged movie today could do it no better, imo...;)

Only one problem I noticed-- I can't adjust the sound volume--my headphones are too loud, and adjusting the audio levels in options does nothing--have to adjust them in the OS sound properties outside the game to lower them. Other than that--great stuff!

GrandBreaker: Don't know if the problem is on my end, but I followed the instructions and am getting the game to run, but there is no campaign mode. I just get to do skirmishes on random maps and the tutorial.

My game's file paths are:

C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release

C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\DATAWORKSHOPMODS

So I changed the target to:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM" -2.3PlayersPatch.big"

and the start in to:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release"

EDIT: I tried redoing the process, and the shortcut became a folder.

Please copy and paste the following (including the quotation marks) into the shortcuts:

For Homeworld 1 Remastered:

Target:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release\HomeworldRM.exe" -dlccampaign HW1Campaign.big -campaign HomeworldClassic -moviepath DataHW1Campaign -workshopmod 2.3PlayersPatch.big

Start in:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release"

---

For Homeworld 2 Remastered:

Target:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release\HomeworldRM.exe" -dlccampaign HW2Campaign.big -campaign Ascension -moviepath DataHW2Campaign -workshopmod 2.3PlayersPatch.big

Start in:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release"

---

For Multiplayer:

Target:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release\HomeworldRM.exe" -workshopmod 2.3PlayersPatch.big

Start in:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release"
Thanks! I got it working now.

Thanks for that tip!

I tried installing some d3dx dlls in Wine via winetricks (installing the whole thing is not adviseable in wine) and sadly it didn't help any here. However, I noticed, that my wine prefix was not as empty as I though. I will create a new prefix and try again (I'll let you know how it goes). There were some cruft left from other experiments for some other games in my winecfg.

However, I noticed in the "master troubleshooting thread" a tip to delete the Profile in the game. By doing that, I noticed that with the community patch, there will be a crash right when starting the game (it can not create the profile). If I run once without the patch, the Profile is created. Now after that I can start with the community patch and do stuff in the menus (and presumably load a saved game, however there are none obviously) but again - a crash when starting a new Campaign game. So - seems with the community patch there is a crash whenever the Profile should be updated? Just a guess, though....

EDIT: I've now tried with a clean WINEPREFIX. No luck here... I've also commented in Wine Appdb, and Steam thread. Hopefully someone has some idea what to do =).

@Wild_Penquin - Edit: See the latest Linux/Mac/Wine/Proton Instructions in the ReadMe.

Additionally, the up-coming build 13 will be able to startup with no profile in place. =)

cloaked: @Wild_Penquin - I'd guess its something to do with Wine, and I can't help with that. First I'd try to see if you can get other mods to work. You can also try to rename 2.3PlayersPatch.big to UpdateHomeworld2.big and move it here:
Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\DataUpdates\UpdateHomeworld2.big
Then start HWR normally without any of the Players Patch command line shortcuts. Note: I usually don't recommend using this method to others, but you can give it a shot. Additionally, the up-coming build 13 will be able to startup with no profile in place. =)
Hi cloaked,

Thanks for your reply!

I tried moving the patch to DataUpdates renamed as you suggested, and suddenly HomeWorld Remastered can start campaign missions with the patch! (I can not create a new profile, I still need to create one by running once without the patch - but from your reply I understand that's how it is for everyone with this build?).

I can see from the HwRM log that it has found and loaded UpdateHomeworld2.big successfully. Also, watched trough the introduction cut scenes and scaffold clearing sequence without issues.

Also, want to confirm the patch is actually applied (opposed to working just because it somehow isn't): went to options -> Gameplay and "Mission Difficulty Scale" -option is now there. I believe it was not there with plain 2.1. Also, the camera pan/rotate etc. options are also a new thing introduced with this patch? So: seems it is applied correctly!

So, thanks again!

P.s. In case you are interested to look into this further, I can still reproduce and provide HwRM.log (along with ErrorLog.txt and Minidumps). As the crash happens with every cut scene (at the very beginning), I though it might give a hint as to what might be breaking. I've seen a few times weird issues with wine (with other games) related to the fact the file system one is running on Linux is actually case-sensitive, but many Windows file systems are not - and software might work just because of that (and actually look for non-existent files just because the file name case is now significant!). EDIT: AFAICT there is nothing indicating the crash is because the game can not find files, but this is just something to keep in mind. Anyways, PM me in case you want more information, such as the crash logs etc.

@Wild_Penquin - Glad you got it working with the method I posted above. Regarding your questions, each is a 'yes'. =)

Build 13 is now available! Thanks to Fear for his long hours improving the drone frigate, and HW_Lover for improving the support frigates. Changes are listed here.

After downloading the file, please note the GOG install steps and shortcuts have changed since build 12 to prevent any potential conflicts with other mods.

hey, first off, thanks for putting in all this work!
i seem to have a problem running the 2.3 players patch.
I installed the patch, and used the provided shortcuts, eg. for HWR1:

Target: "D:\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release\HomeworldRM.exe" -dlccampaign HW1Campaign.big -campaign HomeworldClassic -moviepath DataHW1Campaign -workshopmod 2.3PlayersPatch.big"

Run in: "D:\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release"

I tried all three shortcuts, and they start up fine.
but it always says "v2.1" in the bottom right screen. Also there are no "vast" unit caps, no observer mode and there seems to be no way to adapt the difficulty setting.

Is there a surefire way to find out if I am running a working version?
What am I doing wrong?

My machine:
Win10, i7-7700HQ, 2.8GHz, 8GB RAM

If you're using the latest build 14 of the patch, your shortcuts must be exactly:

For Homeworld 1 Remastered

Target: "D:\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release\HomeworldRM.exe" -dlccampaign HW1Campaign.big -campaign HomeworldClassic -moviepath DataHW1Campaign -workshopmod 2.3PlayersPatch\2.3PlayersPatch.big

Run in: "D:\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release"

For Homeworld 2 Remastered

Target: "D:\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release\HomeworldRM.exe" -dlccampaign HW2Campaign.big -campaign Ascension -moviepath DataHW2Campaign -workshopmod 2.3PlayersPatch\2.3PlayersPatch.big

Run in: "D:\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release"

For Multiplayer

Target: "D:\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release\HomeworldRM.exe" -workshopmod 2.3PlayersPatch\2.3PlayersPatch.big

Run in: "D:\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release"

==================================================================================

It seems you're from Austria.
So if you want to play the games in german, you have to add: -locale German

For example:

Target: "D:\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Remastered\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release\HomeworldRM.exe" -locale German -dlccampaign HW1Campaign.big -campaign HomeworldClassic -moviepath DataHW1Campaign -workshopmod 2.3PlayersPatch\2.3PlayersPatch.big

If you've done everything right, your main menu should look like the attached screenshot.

It worked! Many thanks!
Seems I forgot that crucial "\2.3PlayersPatch.big" right at the end of my command line.
