The only possible reason I can see is that I linked Hollow Knight to my Steam acoount (solely so more people would see me playing it) And Steam replaced the actual save with it's non-existant Cloud save.

That's probably what happened because I've never had this happen. You might be able to check if you still have your regular save file on your computer, if it's the cloud save that's causing this problem and it didn't get overwritten.

I decided to just start the game over from the beginning. This is such a phenominally good game that I figured this is fate's way of telling me to experience it again. Never did finish the damn Trial of Fools though >:(
