"07th Expansion has decided to re-record all the Higurashi BGM and sound effects in the series so customers will be able to enjoy a fresh new track in modern quality."

What a joke... ¿re-record? Thats only a few of the tracks, they have replaced many of the original tracks with tracks from Kai. A lot of the original music is no longer in the game.

Right know, it's not even an option. You can't play the game as originally released. Unless you change the music files back on your own, of course.

I have researched this a bit and you are completely right.
You have the possibility to bring back the original music if you either still have archived the old version of the offline installer or if you are using Galaxy since it has a rollback function.

The music files are stored in
\Higurashi When They Cry Hou .... \HigurashiEp...Data\StreamingAssets\BGM

Simply replace those with the old ones. I personally have archived the old music after this update to be safe in the future as well.

Also: the new music is not optional but mangagamer should make it optional (just like they did with the new CG) - so we should ask them to make this optional as well by contacting them using this adress: support@mangagamer.com

Unfortunately it is all up to mangagamer since GOG is only allowed to sell what they give them, so we should tell mangagamer that while we appreciate the effort to update the soundtrack they should make it optional for those many who preferred the original OST.

Yeah... i have a copy of the tracks already. Its worth noting that the SFX were changed too, there's a folder called SE that its worth saving too.

Yup... i agree.

Thank you for telling me this and don't forget to contact mangagamer. Look at the Steam forums you are not alone - not at all. :)

I sent them an e-mail a week ago... and they didn't even reply. I contacted them again on twitter... and again, no answer.

Sigh... they clearly know what people's opinion is, i'm pretty sure.

Might be but then again they changed the game again and again afaik and also they made the new CG optional so maybe there's a chance this will get optional as well. Anyway with Galaxy we can simply store what WE want to have - luckily exchanging the files is all that it takes.

Yeah... at least we can restore the original files easily.

DDDespair: Is it really that simple? I would think they would've swapped when tracks play. Would the start/stop/loop info be read from the file directly, or would that partially be dictated by the game itself?
I only checked the beginning of chapter 1 (which so far is the only one I own) to be honest but even if changing the files would not be enough (which I doubt) - downgrading with Galaxy would always be enough.

To listen to the new soundtrack you simply can listen to all those files directly with any media player you like. Those are simply ogg files afair so it should not be a problem.

DDDespair: Sure, but it means anyone who doesn't have the option to revert via Galaxy will be screwed.
Those will have to revert to packages others might have saved.

avatar
DDDespair: Presumably that update will be revoked eventually, and it obviously won't be around for Chapters 7 and 8.
The first part I doubt. So far GOG did not revoke older versions afaik.
The other I don't understand tbh. As said, I only own chapter 1 but are you sure there's no downgrade option available in Galaxy for 7 and 8?

DDDespair: Just so people attempting to backup the old audio know, checking the files via Free File Sync, the BGM/SE of the Question Chapters are all the same, as expected. The 2 Answer Chapters are the same, with 6 adding some BGM and giving Rika a longer theme, with the old file being renamed to rika_old or something like that. I'm still guessing that MangaGamer will have changed what tracks play when, besides changing the tracks themselves, so a simple swap probably won't work. I'm betting the patches community can rectify this however.
It is just that - a guess - and I don't see any reason why they should have changed when to play which song. ON the other hand if you already compared the old and new version with Free File Sync you should be able to see if they changed more than just the tracks.
Double Edit: These aren't quite an exact match and have a couple of issues; see below.

DDDespair: Chapters 7 and 8 aren't released, that's way there's no revoke option.
Ah, of course. Yes, as I said - I only own one chapter and I am an absolutely newbie to the series. Sorry for making things more confusing than they are.

DDDespair: At the moment, it seems 07th Mod has reverted this music change with their patch. However, previously, when using Chapter 05's patch, I noted that they had made mention of purposely changing when a few tracks play, because a few select themes were over-used. I'll have to see if this is true or not, and whether the patch can get us back to how the music was before this update.

Edit: Confirmed. The 07th Mod patches will restore the BGM/SE to the previous version. The audio can also be downloaded here http://07th-mod.com/wiki/Higurashi/Manual-Installation/#optional-downloads if you simply want the old music/SE. Just replacing the files does work.
So they did the same thing that was mentioned before but for all chapters including those that are not released here? Thank you for the link.

DDDespair: Yes, they did what was mentioned before, just rolling it into their patches. But not for the upcoming games (or at least not yet), that will depend on how much the naming scheme for the files changes. Or so I'm told.
Nice to hear. So at least we will have an opportunity to archive the games the way we want. I really have to start them sometime - they seem to have a big fanbase... but I just don't have the time ...
