Could you convert the Windows 95 version of HOMM II with PoL?
(or HOMM II Gold if that was originally released in a Win95 version?)
The Win95 version of HOMM II and PoL has long filename and lower/upper case support, plus very importantly the TCP/IP and IPX multiplayer modes that seem to only be in the Windows version. I would probably buy a GOG.com WinXP/Vista version of Win95 H2+PoL (or Gold), definitely if the GOG.com version uses the original Succession Wars music for elements in both SW and PoL like the DOS GOG.com version seems to. =)
I really enjoy this site, the vibe and the service of classic old games (with extras) with minimum fuss. Keep up the great work, and thank you from a gamer who started his HOMM (and Internet) odyssey with the beautiful and fully-featured HOMM II Broken Alliance demo.
Long live Good Old Games! =)
Best regards,
Steven.

I would definitely love a HOMM2 upgrade to the Win95 version. IPX capability is a necessity!!
Yeah, I mean the Dos version is great for single play, but my brother and I like to play against eachother and we want IPX TCP/IP!!!!!

I've asked GOG support team about the W95 version (because I didn't know that the DOS version existed).
My question:
-Why is HoMM2 being run under DOSBox? IIRC it was Win95-only (= no DOS version) game. It works fine, I am just curious.
Their response:
-HoMM2 in DOSBox - HoMM2 had two versions. DOS version was easier to
tame on XP/Vista so we stick with that.

That bolded part is what should interest you.
The Windows version of HOMM II (with PoL) works great on my XP system. It also works on my nephews Windows Seven. There were some glitches where the cd music would disappear but it would work again after a restart. (We haven't tried XP or Windows 95 compability modes yet, maybe they will erase the problem.)
Also, the windows version of Heroes2 have an issue where no cd music is played if you have more than one drive and the game cd is not in the first drive. This problem also causes an annoying condition where the game freezes 0,5 seconds for every 10th second or something. It is easily redeemable with just putting your Heroes2 cd in the first drive (the drive that has the first letter asigned to it.)
HOMM2 for windows should be easy to just put as an additional download (with some conditions that this version is unsupported perhaps) and should work great on XP systems and most likely great or fine on Vista and Seven too. The issue that needs to be solved though is how to provide the cd music for the game. (Since the music is so great and important for Heroes2 players it needs to be there.)
The solution for the DOS version with the original cd played as an image file through DOSbox is a great one. GOG.com should just find a suitable image mounting program to use for it's Windows games so it can provide cd music for them too. It is sorely missing from some titles like Seven kingdoms.
If this was in place I would consider to buy HOMM2 again through gog.com just because it would be easier to change the music that is used in the game. (I like to mix the Original tracks, the POL tracks, some HOMM tracks and some classical, medieval and renaissance tracks back and forth.)
I echo the sentiments of Sargon about the music, and I think this would take some GOG games to the next level of usability, fun and coolness. :-)
Best regards,
Steven.

+1. I just bought it and was disappointed to find that it was the DOS version. Win-95 version, please!
Bump!
I really would love to see this too. The Win95 version is the Good Old Game that most of us played and loved, and I want to have all those features enabled. Please guys, just do it. :D
It would be even more awesome if they gave the Win95 version away as a bonus download for all who have/will purchase the game :D
Please?
I would love to see the Win95 version of HOMM2. I too was disappointed when I found out it was the lesser DOS version. The Win95 version was superior. Please consider adding it as a bonus to purchasers. I can confirm that in general it works fine under XP without any tweaking.
Just posting to say that I was disappointed with the Dos version of Heroes 2, and would dearly like for the Win95 version to be made available as a freebie. The Dos version runs choppily under dosbox for me, and is virtually unplayable.
Agreed. HoMM2 multiplayer is already supported on GameRanger, but this is the WIn95 version, not the old DOS version that GoG is using.
If we get enough players affirming this topic, maybe GOG will take our request into consideration.

The Win 95 version is really superior to the DOS version in terms of general compatibility - DOSBox still lists HOMM2 as a 'playable' game as opposed to 'supported' - it is one level down in terms of compatibility. Plus DOSBox runs it slow as molasses - I can't get sound to run properly without crackling due to CPU limitations, even with the buffer fix posted in another thread. Finally, Windows supports true multiplayer, and that's what many users want to relive.

So GOG please release the Win 95 exe as an additional download! It would make many old gamers happy!
