New to the HOMM series and just made it to the third campaign mission as Roland (after saving those dwarves.) I can never seem to keep up with the AI no matter what I do. I've tried running multiple heroes on a level, and it does help but I end up weakening my units vs one enemy team only for a fresh enemy team to make a beeline for my castle.

Quick question, you do know that since youdid the optional campaign, you can get the dwarves to join you? Play as the elves to make most use of it.
Yeah i did notice they would help me now without fighting. Hopefully that class of monsters holds up well. thanks.

Cherish that feeling while it lasts.

Try not to expand too fast too soon. Consolidate your winnings and build up your defenses.

Have a main hero level up while taking nearby mines/artifacts/neutral ctreatures, in the meantime build up your cities and units. Attack when you're ready.
"Carator Mines" gave me headaches years ago, but I eventually got better at it. The trick is to expand in such a way that you can still successfully react to enemy heroes as they appear. If possible, hire a Barbarian or Knight to be your main hero and buy him a spellbook. While one hero clears the area around your starting town, have another hero scour the outlying regions for Dwarf allies. All the while, always choose Gold from chests so you'll have enough to spend on buildings and creatures. Once most of the Dwarves have joined you, return to town and prepare to expand. Giving your main hero the Logistics secondary skill is vital, as he'll need the extra movement for defense and offense. If you're new to the game, this might require some practice.

It'll also help if you describe what you've tried so far.
Thanks. I ended up completing the mission (now on mission 6: defender.) I feel like there is a balance between waiting for reasonable strength and also snapping at the heels of the enemy early before they can build up. Any extra general tips will always be welcome.

The single most useful skill for any hero is Logistics. The other must-have-except-on-tiny-maps for primary hero is Wisdom. Estates is surprisingly useful for secondary hero, but your primary one is usually better off picking something more useful.

This might be obvious, but usually build all structures before upgrading them. Except in cases where the upgraded unit has an extremely useful skill. Also, be aware that upgrading a unit costs double the difference in gold.

Again, not sure if you know this, but the distance your hero can travel depends on the speed of slowest unit in his army. Giving a single peasant to your secondary hero is not a good idea. Pay a little more and give him something with a decent speed. But then again, don't waste the most powerful unit on him, even if it is fastest.
For the same reason, it might be a good idea to put slow and strong units on town defense duty.
And for the same reason. If you end your day in a castle, move all but the fastest unit to the castle garrison, and then move them back to the hero the following day.
Thanks, and yeah I know about the factor with the slowest unit. Seems futile sometimes when the enemy can source many more units than you by virtue of starting with multiple towns lol.
