Which of the creatures would you have for a meal, and what would you make of it?

I have always wondered how a dragon would taste so that is what I would have tried first. Maybe the green dragons from HOMM III. A dragon is a huge beast so I could invite the whole of my court for a barbeque. But since you never see people eating dragons in fantasy stories there might be a good reason for it. Perhaps I should have tasted some dragon beforehand or even better, have some of my servants taste it.
The Rangers in HOMM2 are quite nice ;-)

Seriously...probably the HOMM2 wolf.

I think you read wrong stories. There are certainly stories where people eat or *try* to eat a dragon.

So I would go with the dragon. Probably the green one. I suppose the golden would be hard to digest and red or black would have to much sulfur in it.

Haha! I love this thread!

I'm a big fan of Japanese foods, so I'd probably have to try a HoMM3 Beholder or Evil Eye. They look the most fish-like. Just imagine it: raw beholder-eye. You could do some pretty good presentation using the center Evil Eye eye surrounded by the smaller ones. ^_^

Roast Roc or Griffin would probably be good, but too much like chicken to really be a unique experience.

Serpent Fly and/or Naga might be interesting...

A HoMM3 Beholder or Evil Eye would certainly be unique. I'm not sure if I would find it too freaky or not. Normally I don't eat anything that is staring back at me, and those Evil Eyes would certainly be quite a fearsome sight, even when they were dead. An acquired taste for sure. I don't think they would taste very fishy since they don't live in the sea or eat sea creatures or alga. I would also think that a big bird-beast like a griffin would be quite different from a chicken in taste, but probably not as unique as a Beholder :)

Serpent Fly would go well with roasted cashews and a salad made with Coriander leaves and Rocket Salad me thinks. What kind of dish would you make of a Naga?

Possible. So what faith usually awaits the dragon eaters in your stories? Do they get poisoned? Do they get some bad karma from breaking some unspoken taboo? Or can they walk home happily with their bellies full?

Yeah, I instinctively went for the green one.

In the story that comes to my mind at the moment, the dragon was edible, but only after preparing it for a month (otherwise it would be poisonous). Heroes did not have enough time to wait.

Hey, how did my username get there? I didn't post that :p

I've been working on how the system of replies works. And I think now I've nailed it down. :P Sorry. I think now the quotes are in order.
I think I'd try the Phoenix. Mmmm, spicy! Plus, after you had gotten done eating it, you could eat it again.

A month! Well, in the quest for culinary treasures some sacrifices must be made.

OctopusMan: ?
Dragon-hunting was a side "quest" and they had more pressing matters to attend to. And they only learned of the time required to prepare the food after they'd spent like two days to hunt the dragon down.

Yes, you're probably right about that. Still, I wonder what magical powers you might get from eating one of those eyes. ;^)

Totally agree with you on the Serpent Fly, but then again, anything with roasted cashews is pretty much awesome. :^)

As for the Nagas, I think you would only prepare the tail. Eating the "human" upper half would feel too much like cannibalism, lol! My thoughts about Naga tail is that it would be excellent chopped into pieces and grilled Szechuan or Mongolian style in peanut oil with broccoli, onions, garlic, and bell peppers.

That sound very yummy! But I would chop up the upper half too. Letting good Naga go to waste is a sin! But I can understand your feelings about similarity to cannibalism. People seem to have different limits to this, like how some people thinks it is okay to eat monkeys and some don't. For me it is simple, if it has human DNA it is cannibalism if it hasn't it is fair game. If I was having people over for some Naga I would probably chop the upper half up well so there was no similarity to anything human anymore.

Second sight? A "third eye"? The ability to see things as they really are? An ability to detect when people lie? Better eyesight? Some really imposing and piercing eyes? The possibilities are many.

Maybe you can do this in one of the roguelike RPG's.

Some of them like Nethack gives you a lot of options on how to feed your character. All the way from vegan to cannibal.

It's crazy idea but I would want to try Griffin... it can be mix of two flavors :)
Gorgons in HOMM3. I'm sure the meat under the thick crust will taste like thick beef. mm...
Of course, I'll have to be careful not to stare at its eye when I poke one's head.

When I think of it, every creature in the Fortress town looks like a tasty treat. No wonder the Erathians were so harsh on them! Good thing Tarnum took matters into his own hands in the Chronicles series.
