JudasIscariot: Glad you like it! I'll pass the compliments down to our tech team, since they did the hard work of getting all this to work ;D.

TheJoe: Next step would definitely be a nice little changelog or note on what the update does to go with that notification. Your posts are great but it might not be obvious to everyone that the most recent update's notes are in a sticky in a forum somewhere.
Yes, please incorporate a changelog for all assets, preferably accessible via a link beside each asset. That would be great.

DodoGeo: I would be cool to fix Heroes 2, the broken sound for Dimension Door or Town Portal.
Indeed. And including the audio tracks from the expansion too. Or have they been added?
avatar
BlackChar: also, ISO made in CDBurner?
Really? It uses redbook audio? HoMM2 used to do that, but they switched it to .ogg at some point. I never understood why, and seeing that HoMM1 now uses redbook, it's even more peculiar.

Nope, town screens have vanilla music no mater what type of game you play.

Nope, there's no redbook audio in DOS version of HoMM1. Only Win95 version of HoMM1 used it. That's probably why they got rid of high quality music for DOS version when they released hybrid disc for HoMM compendium. Audio tracks occupy a lot of space on discs.

As for ogg files - this is just workaround for ISO9660 limitation. There is actually no support for redbook audio in standard ISO images. Cue sheets are one of the ways to emulate redbook audio on virtual drives. DOSBox luckily supports ogg files to be used as audio tracks so GOG just uses this feature. There was no switch to ogg, it's just one of compatibility tricks they use.

(Daemon tools, for instance, supports only wav files in cue sheets, though they have some proprietary format for storing audio tracks in one file, but that belongs to another thread, IIRC )

No, you are in fact wrong. HoMM2 did use to have redbook audio. I know, because I have that version. It was changed before you joined the site. See this thread for more info.

HoMM 1 for DOS never use redbook (GoG version for example). HoMM 1 for Windows, however, uses redbook. Original release of HoMM II never use .ogg
Thanks for the updated game you guys do great work for us.

I am talking only about the GOG versions, and the GOG version of HoMM2 has changed several times over the years.

Oh, you're right. Older release used to include raw image, which contained Redbook. But it's GOG, who made the switch, nothing has changed from the game's point of view. I misunderstood that part :)

The point still stands, though. If the old version of HoMM2 used a cue/bin combination (which is used e.g. by CloneCD or IsoBuster), then it's not ISO9660-compliant image. Yes, they are in single raw file and the cue sheet contains offsets instead of separate files for audio tracks. Yes, you can probably mount the raw file or unpack it, because it probably has ISO9660 filesystem header in the beginning. But since the standard only defines the data track, such file should not use .iso extension. But that's just nitpicking :)

I never said they did. You said the HoMM installation now included an ISO image. Not knowing that that image type does not support redbook audio, I assumed that was the reason for its presence there. I can't think of any other, except possibly to satisfy a disc-check by the game, but I'd assume GOG would remove something like that.

The old GOG version of HoMM2 did indeed use a cue/bin combination, albeit renamed to .inst and .gog, respectively.

Yes, that's probably the reason. Use of dosbox mounting seems to be less "hacky" solution than removing cd-checks from binaries. It's less work and less possibility of error. And the image is still renamed to .gog, by the way, possibly to hide it from nosy users that would want to dissect it and then argue about mostly irrelevant technical details.

As for the first message, I was just surprised because I thought the software they used is outdated. Seems it's still under development, so I was wrong again. Oops.
Works for me, perfectly, no lags or any other issues.

Well done, GOG team, you guys really care!

JudasIscariot: Hey guys,

Just wanted to chime in and let you all know that we added 16-bit stereo music to our version of Heroes of Might and Magic 1. Please download the bigger (literaaly :D), stronger, and even awesomer installer and let us know what you think! :D

Have a nice day! :D
This should really be extremely hot. Thanks for your effort guys.

Is there anything else?
To whom it may concern:

I'd like to point out that I've discovered a problem with this version, playing under Boxer on a Mac.

The game, as installed by the new version 2.1 installer – in common with patched versions of the game from the previous installer – is able to freeze unexpectedly, though this appears to happen only when playing under Boxer, not under Wine. The version of the game with 8-bit sound does not freeze in this way.

Please see this post and following for further details:

Newb question - How do I play windows games on mac computer? Love the HOMM series, have them separately on a windows computer which took a dive. Currently running an older mac 10.6.8 I have tried and failed to use Wine - I know very little about other options. Please let me know
