I can post my Specs if you want me to, but I don't really think I need to. A generic store-bought computer is...well...obvious.

Basically, the game's been crashing A LOT while trying to play the game. I'm not sure what it is, so that's why I came here. Weirdly, when I was playing multiplayer with a friend, it never crashed. The crashes are usually about 20-40 minutes in, so that's why it's weird.

Any suggestion(s)?

Put imagecfg.exe file to your game directory.
Open command line promt and change current folder to game folder using cd command.

In case You have GoG version (with cracked game exe) execute in order:
imagecfg -u Heroes3.exe
imagecfg -a 0x1 Heroes3.exe

In case you have original 3DO licensed version (with Safedisc v1.50.020 copy protection):
imagecfg -u Heroes3.exe
imagecfg -u Heroes3.icd
imagecfg -a 0x1 Heroes3.exe
imagecfg -a 0x1 Heroes3.icd

To elaborate a little on what parysm said, HOMM3 will crash if it tries to use more than one processor of a multi-core system. Mostly that happens for longer games or bigger maps. Imagecfg forces HOMM3 to only use one core, which fixes the problem. You might run into other issues if you installed into Program Files, though, but hopefully that will fix most of the crashes.
I already tried the image.cfg, it practically crashed my HoMM somehow, so I had to re-install it, and the image.cfg wouldn't even open.

EDIT: But the site said to put it in the system 32...could that be why? I could try putting it in my game directory.

You only use the imagecfg program to patch the main heroes exe file. You don't even need it on the computer after that.

Note - it also works to patch the HD version if you choose to use it.

just copy the imagecfg to the same directory as your heroes game - then run it as administrator.
But, I still don't understand...it never OPENED. It just flashed open then closed. Is it supposed to do that?

It's a console program... you don't double-click it, you open a command prompt and execute from there, supplying the required parameters via text

Re-read parysm's post again... he described the exact procedure to follow; you need to do that once, after than you'll just launch Homm3 as usual, and it will be stable

As I just said, it doesn't open. How am I supposed to use it, if it doesn't open?

Specifically, I really don't know what 'Command line promt' is, and I really don't know what he means by game directory. If he means the game file, then I know where it is.

Windows button
Acessories
Command Prompt

If you don't know how to do it, ask somebody you know - it's hard to spell it out in a forum post.

directory=folder

No offence, but get the assistance of someone with a basic PC knowledge; point him to the instructions above and he should be able fix the problem for you in a couple of minutes.

I just don't know the exact wording that people use. I say main game folder, or main folder.

Anyways, it's fixed. Thanks.
I'm reviving this for a purpose...would this work in any game?
well, only if that's what's causing the problem. this usually happens with games that were released before 2000. There is an easier, though temporary solution (you have to redo this every time you play the game), also described in the HoMM3 crash page (at least I think it it), you open the task menu (you will be able to either open it, or get to a screen that has the option to open, via pressing ctrl+alt+delete). Under the application tab, right click on the suspected program, click "go to process", right click on the highlighted process, choose "set affinity" and make sure only one processor core is selected.
