It worked, I have a gorgeous vintage background. I still get the loading screen from AB but I can live with it (for now : P). Many thanks Thiev.

changing loading screen is even easier ;)
For some reason backround_restore doesn't work for me. I wanted to remove the angel picture so I can play the game in HD mod, but it doesn't seem to work or I'm doing something wrong. The window that pops up when I start the .bat file goes too quickly for me too see what reads in it, like if it's succesfful or not. I had to reinstall the game to remove the picture.

It was tested only on vanilla install, not with HD mod.

Edit: oh, and you can edit .bat with notepad, simply add 'pause' above 'exit', save and run. Screen won't close without your input.

Got backround_restore.bat working now. I didn't have a "backup" folder in ArchangelBg folder, so the executables didn't move actually any files. Well at least I got this one working. Too bad about the HD mod though.
If You use ERA this should be doable as a mod. This has the added benefit of not modifying the original files. I did this for WOG + New Interface Mod by modifying the NIM files to include appropriately renamed files (it works, but alas, no flaming sword). I tried to do this for vanilla (ERA without GOG) and for WOG alone, but was unsuccessful.

Someone who, unlike me, has actual working knowledge of the ERA modding system should be able to do this. Maybe ask around Heroes Community ERA/WOG forums.

It can work with HD, but without animated background.
edit both .cmd files and remove any lines with 'video.vid' (or simply add 'REM' at the beginning of each line).

This worked, thanks!

Lol, they weren't even .bat files. I thought I could finally show that I know something :D
Thanks a lot, it looks great! (though I had to start it from CMD.exe for some reason)

Just a quick question: is it possible to get the whole menu into its original look?

/edit
NVM, got that running 8)

OK all, just to complete the amazing work done by Thiev (thanks man!): I created another patch which replaces map selection menu, multiplayer image and the loading screen. All but the loading screen are taken directly from RoE.

As for the loading image, NWC changed the loading bar position between RoE and AB (and all later releases). What follows, I downloaded a H3 wallpaper and added a proper bar space into the appropriate area. Since that wallpaper was a jpeg (as opposed to bmp images used by H3), there is some visible compression on the image. I also added some sharpening to reduce the blur.

If anyone has a proper bmp image of archangel fighting the devil, I can easily add the bar to it.

The patch can be downloaded here.
The instructions are exactly the same: extract into data folder and run "replace menu img.bat" from archangelm folder. You might have to use admin rights to do that.

Similarly, these tools were used to extract images and create a patcher.
Attachments:
menu2.jpg (219 Kb)
menu1.jpg (169 Kb)
menu3.jpg (235 Kb)
menu4.jpg (267 Kb)
Works wonders, thanks CRW.
