If you have WINE 1.1.31 or later, HOMM3 will probably lock up "occasionally", fairly unpredictably.
The solution is to put your desktop in a 16-bit depth before you start the game. There is a new feature as of 1.1.31 or so which tries to optimize behavior of 16-bit color written to 24-bit displays, and it is apparently buggy, or possibly vulnerable to a bug in HOMM3. If you make this change, though, it works great. Downside, though, this exposes another bug which is that HOW DO I STOP PLAYING I HAVEN'T EATEN IN THREE DAYS. (I exaggerate slightly for humorous effect.)
