So for years we have all been saying that no RMG existed for HoMM games until HoMM3 and the Armageddon's Blade expansion but I just opened up the HoMM 2 Gold map editor and within such is the option to generate a random map and save it without looking at it. You then have to start HoMM 2 and select said map (name it something like "random map 03" or some such) to play it but this is too cool. For years I have barely played Heroes 2 because I thought there was no RMG.

Unfortunately there is apparently some bugginess to this. My last game I played resulted in an unwinnable map because it did not register that all of the opponents were defeated and the thieves guild said the 'Blue' computer player had the most towns (I had the whole map revealed and I owned all towns) but featured no portrait for said player.

I will try a few more maps out to see if it happens again.

Also there was mostly elemental creature recruitment (and a couple genie, rogue and archer ones) but I don't even remember how many creature genrators there were in Heroes 2 so...*shrug*.
I don't have the game installed on my Mac, but I remember using the HOMM2 map editor in the late 90's. It had sliders for nearly every feature, but the finished map would always display after it was done generating. You could then save it to a filename and play it later. Unfortunately, I didn't care for the haphazard map designs it would churn out. I recall playing a hotseat game with a buddy, and he didn't appreciate not having a Sawmill anywhere near his Knight town! I didn't get HOMM3: AB until many years later, and I was shocked by how comparatively excellent the RMG was.

There is a checkbox to prevent the finished map from displaying.

However you are right that it does generate haphazard maps. The map I generated and mentioned above had only a few ore mines and it was not until I had almost cleared the whole map before I found them. Plus the bug I mentioned where the map could not be completed.
