Problem with discs is(I own all the HoMM 2 & 3 CDs myself) that they get scratched and worn out over time. Gog is great because you do not have to mess with your CDs/DVDs and you have the downloads as a backup...always.

I've got discs from the mid 90s that still work fine (TIE Fighter Collectors CD for example).
I agree $10 for HoMM1 is a bit too much. The game is rarely sold alone these times and a few years ago (!) I was able to buy HoMM1-3 compilation for less than $10 in Poland. Three games! I bought the 3rd version again on GoG because I love this game and because the compilation version was 3.2 (SoD) instead of 4.0 (Complete). I also don't like the Polish translation, it's one of the most terrible ones I've seen.

But I probably won't buy HoMM1 for such a price. I can always use a CD version and even if it stops working, HoMM2 and HoMM3 are considerably better. I might buy it for $5, $10 is far too much... (though it was IMHO quite reasonable price for HoMM3)

james5272: Heroes of Might and Magic 1 is Abandonware, no need to buy it
At $10, it's overpriced.
No you are abandonware. Immorality is rewarded with punishment in the afterlife.

SkeleTony: I think where the confusion lies is that HoMM WAS released as freeware by NWC/3DO several years ago. And now Ubisoft or whomever has worked out something to sell it again through GOG. I bought the GOG versions of Heroes II and III and am very glad I did but I cannot for the life of me see any good reason to pay for HoMM(the original, first game)!? Not because it is so old really but to my mind that is like being given a free penciled and inked drawing by a favorite comic book artist at a convention, for free, then that artist dies and his widow is now calling you up asking if you want to buy photocopies of the piece of art he gave you before he died.
When was HOMM released as freeware, can you verify this?

I've never heard of it before. I only know that the original King's Bounty was released as a bonus on the Compendium version of HoMM I and II. That would however not make King's Bounty freeware. Theoretically HoMM I could have been released for free at one time in a magazine, that would however NOT make it freeware. It would just have been a one time gift to the subscribers of that magazine. Many people in the west do not understand the meaning of freeware.

Your analogy is less than good. Are you saying that if you give something to someone that you made yourself it would be faulty to sell the same type of thing to someone else later? Say if I worked as a sculptor and made a fine bust of Julius Evola and gave it to my friend. Would it be wrong of me to make and sell more busts of Julius Evolva to other people in the future? Should I just give them away for free if I make them?

I am not at all saying what you think I was saying. I was merely laying out the reasons why some are confused about the whole issue and also why I personally would not pay money for this game. I am not saying anyone should be allowed to steal anything from anyone else. Just that this game SHOULD be freeware or priced in the 99 cent range at best. If I can buy HoMM 2 or 3 for $5 or less then I can see no good reason to pay the same amount for HoMM or Kings Bounty.

You know what? Someone might say the same about HoMM II when HoMM V drops down to the 9,99 $ price range. Would you agree with that?
