So I've tried GOG version on my friend's laptop PC. Spec is more than enough to play Dota 2 60 FPS, so sys req is not an issue. He noted me that he usually plays on XP Virtual Machine due to problem that's listed on topic title. Kinda sad since GOG is supposed to give assurance that the game works properly on modern machine. On XPVM though, it works wonder.

When playing on Win 7 x64, however, the intro movie is VERY choppy and finally crashes.

Because of this issue I'm hesitant to buy the game. Please address this and give advice. Thank you.

For HOMM3.

Managed to fix this with

http://games.softpedia.com/progDownload/Heroes-of-Might-and-Magic-3-Unofficial-HD-Patch-Download-81760.html

It allows me to skip the intro movie. Now all is well and in 'HD'... well at least it looks better on my friend's machine - he no longer needs that virtual machine.

Shame that GOG didn't actually fix the issue for new OS. =s

I'll just play HOMM 6 on Steam then.

Please don't forget to set your display settings to 16 bit colors. 32 bit colors makes HOMM3 crash every 5-10 minutes.

Actually, the problem with crashes can easily be fixed by setting affinity to core 0 on multicore CPU. The color depth (16,32) actually has no relation with these crashes. :-)
