When I play this game, none of the cinematics shows before or between missions. It makes it terribly confusing, because I'm missing most of the story and have to guess at what to do each mission. Any idea why?

I have exactly the same problem, nothing shows (no intro, no logo, none of the cutscenes/comic-book-like scenes as found in the game's folder). Well, the scenes rendered with the game engine work though.

I'm wondering if it's not because of nVidia Optimus, it's rare but some games really don't like it. I've checked which GPU the game is running on, and it keeps "locking" on Intel HD, even when nVidia GPU should be used instead. Anyway, whatever the graphic card it may be relying on, no cinematics at all. I've tried with "disable desktop themes", adding the game as an exception in k-lite codec pack, lowering sound frenquency... nothing.

I've found with other games that running in a window often helps, maybe it's possible with this game?

i have the same problem, no movie is showing.
Also a Laptop with Optimus, maybe you are right and this is the cause...i tried alot to get it orking but no success so far. If you find a solution please be so kind to post here, thanks
I have the exact same issue but i have a desktop computer with an AMD card, so GPU is not the issue.
Running under Win8.1
Having the same issue here.
Using Windows 8.1 64Bit, Nvidia GPU, newest Drivers
i have still not found any working solution for this problem. Has anyone managed to get the videos working? :/
Gonna bump this again, because I'm *still* having this issue as well, on my new comp... looks like a Win8 thing? Any solutions or workarounds out there yet? It really detracts from the campaign mode a lot to have most of the story inexplicably missing...
I have the game on steam with the same issue so it is not only the GOG version. What has GOG support said?
+1

no cinematics

however it is possible to watch the videos (with vlc, mpc).
they are under Heroes of Annihilated Empires\Data\video\
in the .ogv files (ogg theora format)

Possible solution in thread "differences between cd-box, steam and gog versions" (In options, select 16-bit instead of 24-bits color, and you should see the videos))- sorry but gog doesn't allow me to post links :( Why they don't remove this restriction for proven longterm community members is beyond me...
