Love the western theme and the tactical combat is well done and fun. BUT, I wish it had the ability to save mid-mission. As it stands, if you fail the mission, you start over from the beginning.
Saving mid mission wouldn't really be a good thing for this game as the missions are very short and besides it would take all the fun out of the game but i do realise that gamers now have to save their games constantly as they can't have any kind of challenge or they will just hate all over the game.
Missions are too short for saving. My longest fight had nearly 15 rounds.
But maybe in last scenario's number of rounds dramatically increases...
I don't think mid-mission saving has anything to do with game difficulty; actually, a lot of games that allow saving anytime manage to be super fun and challenging (like JA series). It's that some people can only squeeze time to have a quick play during lunch breaks. Not everyone can play games for hours straight.
The checkpoint system works really well so you don't have to play the game for hours.

To clarify: Actually the game should allow you to save at anytime. Especially when learning a new game, it allows exploring the game without unintentionally screwing yourself over. Those who do not like a "save anywhere" can choose just not to use it.

As it stands, it's like a console game. One save slot, saves at checkpoints. So if you make a mistake due to learning a new game,, your're screwed. Can't restore to an earlier spot. For PC games with GB's of space, really inexcusable to only have one save.

Anyway: where is save location (32bit GoG version) ?
I liked the checkpoints just fine. The fights are so short, there's no trouble starting over. The entire campaign is so short that there's no trouble playing it again if you want to try something different. Just my opinion.

The saves should be located in My Documents/Hard West.
