Please look for a _redist folder in the directory where you have the game installed and run the redistributable installer for Microsoft Visual C++ :)

If there is no _redist directory, then please let me know what the error message said :)
Well, I've reinstalled Galaxy and woops it's working !
Problem solved
Hi I have the same behaviour; launch game, two company logo videos and a game logo video then crash to desktop:

---------------------------
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
---------------------------
Runtime Error!

Program:

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

I have tried reinstalling HardWest, and installing various version of the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library to no avail.

There is no _redist folder in the game directory.

==EDIT==

Now working after an OS restart. (?!)

I had the same problem as you did(win 8.1). I had installed the game manually, not using galaxy, there was no _redist folder to be found.

I tried finding the correct version of the redistributable from Microsoft directly, I also tried rebooting the computer afterwards, but alas nothing worked...

Then, I decided to start galaxy, I didn't run it for a few months now... so it started updating itself, I clicked launch inside galaxy, yay!

Now everything is fine, I can launch the game outside of galaxy too.

I just installed using the GOG downloader files, and I have this same C++ runtime error. There is no _redist folder anywhere on my hard drive. The exact message I get is:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

X Runtime Error!

Program:

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the applications's support team for more information."

The exact sequence is this:
1) I launch the game.
2) Gambitious credits screen displays
3) CFG credits screen displays
4) Hard West splash screen displays
5) Screen goes black, with a movable game cursor. Stays this way for about 10 seconds.
6) Crash to desktop with the error message I quoted above.
Same error...as above, but solved easy enough....

Install game + Direct X
( C++ Not installed or Net 4.0 as newer version found. )

Hard West splash screen displays
Screen goes black, with a movable game cursor. Stays this way for about 10 seconds.
Crash to desktop...

----------------------------------------------------------------

I had task manager open & noticed Galaxy Comm running. (Shouldn't be it was removed)....

So after deleteing leftover crap the game works.
Leftover crap found in C:\ProgramData\GOG.com

ProgramData is a hidden folder....
Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files, folders, and drives, and then apply and OK.

Well that is strange! In my case, Galaxy was not running (I haven't used it in months). But I did have a c:\ProgramData\GOG.com\Galaxy folder. Dunno why or if it should be considered leftovers, so I renamed the folder. And now the game launches successfully. I hope that GOG looks into this issue. The problem does not seem to be with the game. (are you listening Judas?)

First, try installing or repairing your MS Visual C++ 2010 install (32-bit) or MS Visual C++ 2010 install (64-bit)

As for your other post just above this one regarding removing or renaming a directory, please send us a Support ticket about this as I am not sure what's going on with that.

Well, not to be argumentative, but only for clarity:

Reinstalling C was not necessary and I did not do it. My problem was solved with the rename of that Galaxy folder. I did not try any other solutions and changed nothing else on my PC, so I am certain what solved it.

About opening a support ticket: won't the support guys be upset with me if I don't have a problem for them to fix? The game works as intended, now.

You do. They should fix the bundled galaxy.dll to fail gracefully. Alternatively, they could write a Galaxy uninstaller to actually uninstall old versions of Galaxy.
