When Grim Dawn updated to version 1.0.0.4 the GOG version suddenly stopped working on Windows XP systems. When Grim Dawn.exe is run, a small black window pops up and then disappears a second later when the program terminates. No amount of reinstalling or repairing is going to fix this as it is being caused by code within the executable. While I suspect that this was an intentional malicious action on the part of GOG, for the sake of this post let's assume that it wasn't.

Why did the game suddenly stop working? Why hasn't it been fixed? Will it even be fixed?
Probably not; game card says - Works on: Windows (Vista, 7, 8, 10)!

Unfortunately it seems your best bet now is to just reinstall (or roll back to) the old version and carry on playing that. Not ideal I know but better than nothing...

The official site says it supports Windows XP. Both legitimate and pirated copies of the steam edition work on Windows XP, so this problem is exclusive to the gog edition. Why is gog changing the system requirements on a game they are distributing?

Probably because they won't want to bother anymore with an OS whose support has stopped 3 years ago. Though it is kinda strange since gog also provides offline installers and you don't have to be online for it.
I've looked on steam and it says indeed Windows XP, though at the minimum requirements. At the recommend it says Windows 7/10.

You missed the point. There is no bother. The game was working fine until they purposely made it stop working. All they need to do is stop fucking with a game they don't own.

Unbelievable! After removing those files, I now have Grim Dawn v1.0.0.9 working on my system. I can't thank you enough for posting that link. Thanks, Gremlion.
This actually doubled my fps, thanks.

You can try the /d3d9 argument for launch options on the EXE this will negate the new render used.
Latest version broken now on XP? Neither deleting the files nor /d3d9 seems to work. Anyone still cares?
Sad this is starting a trend. Lots of games seem to push for win10 nowadays. Imo, nothing there is what we need. win xp was best os, no bs. win7 is last bastion. But its already "old" even though os never damn ages!!

All to push the spyware os that hijacks your abilities to use your pc anyway you want. (win10).
Game still supports Vista onwards (base game Win XP) and recommended minimum is Win7 so I don't see how you can say the devs are pushing the game to support Win10 only.
I was told the Steam version and original game still work on XP. It is GOG's fault. They modified the game. It now includes GOG Galaxy stuff that has nothing to do with the original game but breaks XP support.
