I have a method to beat the first chapter relatively easy. Once you get 200 or 400 (i can't remember) gold, go to the harbor and buy the shadow beast transformation scroll from the alchemist. Go outside of the town, far away from any "useful" npcs and use it. BUT save before you use it, because you can't save while transformed. Now go and kill every hostile creatures - it's up to you.
But you should keep in mind a few things (SOME SPOILER AHEAD):
1) YOU CAN'T SAVE WHILE YOU TRASFORMED. As soon as your health is low, end the tranformation. It's better to gain fewer xp than start again the hunt.
2) If you meet a human npc, they will attack you. Always. It doesn't matter if you just save his/her life, completed a mission for him/her, the npc will attack you, even after you finished the transformation. It will attack you when it see you.
3) You can't loot, use items, use magic, open the inventory, talk to npcs. You can only kill, kill, and if i forgot to mention, kill.
4) You can one-shot most of the mobs - blood flies, goblins, scavangers. The stronger mobs require 2, even 3 hits. It's a piece of cake.
5) You will gain a lot of XP. I usually start this at lvl 5-6, and end it nearly lvl11. You get the levels, the skill points, so it's just like normal gameplay, but you stronger.
6) You can help yourself - don't just go and kill, but kill with a plan. You can complete the lighthouse quest even before you accept it. You can kill the bandits in the mountains, so when you get the quest to kill them you don't have to do anything.
7) The animals don't attack you (non of them if i'm remember correctly) but the all of the npcs will. But if you kill an animal from a pack, the pack will attack you.
8) Roam the map. Keep in mind the routes where you shouldn't go - the routes where you meet a lot of npcs. Don't go near the tavern, the town, Xardas, the monostery (there's a guy outside, in a chapel who you need if you want to be a mage). Don't go to the landlord. Avoid the npcs who will give you quest. AVOID ALL THE NPCS, this is the most important things (you don't have to the bandits, you can kill them, and you should). Kill everything else, you need a lot of xp, especially when you buy 1 mana for 5 LP.
9) The whole island is yours. Roam it, get to know it - the beast won't attack you, so you can -almost- safely explore the map. Use this to your advantage.
10) Don't try to kill the black troll, he is stronger than you. Even if you manage to kill him, you'll be at low hp. So if you want to try it, leave it for last. AND pick up the mission for it's hide.
+1) There is another scroll you might find useful - it transform you into a dragonsnapper. It is the most powerful of the transformation scrolls, you can use it too, but leave it for later. When you get to Jardenkhar you will find it useful.
++1) If you have to fight a lot of enemies at once (like the fight in dexter's camp), you should buy and use the "summon demon" scroll. For 5 mana you get a mate who will kill nearly everyone. Another good choice is the fire rain, but i'm not sure you can get that without joining the mages.

One thing to correct - not all NPCs attack you - Orcs run away unless there are a lot of them and that makes it really easy to run down shamans and kill them. A warg can do this too (its a sneak attack :) ) but other Orcs will try to help the shaman.

I don't count the orcs when i mention npcs. I know the definition for npc is Non-player Character, but i use the word for the characters you can interact with, speak with, etc, so the useul, friendly ones. That's why i don't count the bandits too (not in jarhdenkar).
So, the good boys are the npcs, the bad ones are the mobs.

OK, I stand corrected :)
I apologize in advance if this is a redundant post, but my others didn't seem to get posted.

I am still in Chapter 1, read the not about the scroll to transform into a shadowbeast, and ran around trying to find who sold it. I can't find any vendor who sells it. Anyone?

I read elsewhere that Ignaz sells the Dragon Snapper transformation scroll after you do his experiment (which I've done), but he doesn't seem to have that one for sale either. In fact, no one seems to be selling any transformation spells.

Also, I read on another site that while you get the experience points from your kills, if you go up a level while transformed you do not get the HP increase that normally comes with a level increase. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks,

Ignaz sells them, it's true, both the shadowbeast and the dragon snapper, but i don't think you have to complete the quest for him - you get the chance to learn alchemy from him if you do. You should able to buy the scrolls from the beginning.

Have you installed the addon, or just the vanilla game? Because the missing addon can cause this, i think.

I am playing with NOTR installed.

Don't know if this is the case but what is sold changes with each chapter. I may simply be too early. i don't remember running into them that early.
The correct way to play G2: NotR is either as a Mage (hard as fuck) or Archer (if you do everything right, easy).

Archer is the ultimate way to do it really. At 80 DEX you get Acrobatics (which used to be a trainable skill in G1) which makes travel a lot easier. You can also pickpocket throughout the game for immense XP. Also, with DEX as your main stat you can use bows (which are nuts), as well as 1-handers (i.e. Betty, Rapier, Sword, Master Sword). You can even dump some points into 1h, but imo that isn't necessary. Bows can also be bought from vendors and you won't really have to hunt them down.
Nevertheless, some segments of the game can still be tough, but hey, that's Gothic.

Be smart, play an archer!

Note that the dexterity is only used for equipping such swords; the critical hit damage bonus is still determined by your strength.

Yeah. Also, in case someone's interested, here are the damage calculations:

The bow isn't really well discussed there though, it's also worth looking that up, since bow damage is calculated differently.

edit: this for bows:
