...
5. Unpack the framerate unlocker, the GothicMod executable is in //Gothic\system

MaGoth: To delete..

MfG MaGoth,
Can confirm, just Installed SystemPack and FPS is already unlocked
avatar
mmarci: Decided to copy all these posts in one for easier navigation - Gothic series modding guide

Gothic 1

1. Install the game
2. Install Player Kit
3. Install System Pack
4. Install Freddy's world patch
5. Install ThielHater's texture patch
6. Unpack the framerate unlocker, the GothicMod executable is in //Gothic\system

Gothic 2

1. Install the game
2. Rename gothic.exe to gothic2.exe in /system
3. Install this patch
4. Go on with the PlayerKit
5. Install SystemPack
6. Install the D3D11 renderer
7. Download and extract the base game normalmaps to system\GD3D11
8. Download and extract Vurt's improved textures normalmaps to system\GD3D11\replacements

This gives you the enhanced Gold Edition without any significant game play changes.

Gothic 3

For those who would like to play through G3 for the *insert appropriate number* time, here's some additional information as the OP is slightly outdated. I will also post links and installation guidelines for the most commonly used mods.

1. Install the game
2. Get the latest community patch
3. Install Questpaket
4. Patch QP 4.2 to make it compatible with the latest community patch
5. Install the latest Content mod
6. Enjoy the massively enhanced game

Note to GoG: it would be awesome if you dedicated resources to host mods for these old games as well, external links are taken down on a regular basis.
For Gothic 1 why are two texture patches suggested (Freddy and ThielHater)? Do they complete each other or is there some overriding?
Also in Freddy's page there are two donwload links: "Textures" patch and "worlds". Do I need toi install them both? I don't speak German so I'm probably missing some steps.
Lastly: google translate tells me something about "Must be started to use this patch a new game ". Does this mean I new to restart the game to apply the patch? Because this page says the opposite (plus it doesn't make sense for a texture patch to require a new game.
Someone cares to enlighten me please? :)

Thanks MaGoth, fixed it. Like I said, I don't know too much about the first game but since no one posted a guide, I thought I'll try anyway.

I messed that one up. The world patch is not compatible with the other texture patches I think in some areas, I fix the guide. The texture patch and ThielHater's patch are compatible though. ThielHater's is a texture resolution upgrade, Freddy's world patch fixes specific areas. The original Freddy's texture patch is just a general texture upgrade.

As for the German text on the page, I have no idea, I don't speak German at all.

If someone can make the DX11 renderer to work with G1, share the tricks please, for that version would go far better with the Big Nature mod.

EDIT: copied all in one post here
Thanks for the post, very helpful. Hopefully I should be able to get Gothic up to date and ready to play!
No problem guys.

I played around with the G1 DX11 renderer files and finally got the game working but it was so resource heavy (R9290X GPU went to 95 degrees in less than two minutes) and far from optimized the game was unplayable.

Keep trying because I plan to play G1 in the coming weeks anyway, and I plan to try it in its full glory. Like I said before, any good ideas please share.

There's this guide on Steam forums

I can't make it work though, after the introduction I get a black screen, with sounds playing, but nothing else.
Gothic 2 Gold (includes Night of the Raven) runs great under Win10x64 with my R9 380 4GB GPU & the 16.1 Crimsons, after the following patches are applied:

Install the following fixes into the game root folder (typically: C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Gothic 2 Gold or C:\Program Files (x86)\JoWooD\Gothic II\):

- gothic2_fix-2.6.0.0-rev2.exe (http://www.worldofgothic.de/dl/download_278.htm)
- gothic2_playerkit-2.6f.exe (http://www.worldofgothic.de/dl/download_168.htm)
- g2notr-systempack-1.1.exe (http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/threads/1340357-Release-Gothic-½-—-SystemPack-(ENG-DEU))

Works on both the Steam and GOG versions.
Is there a way to fix Gothic 1's very small text? It hurts my eyes at 1080p. Even a simple flat UI magnification would be good.

The closest thing is this patch:
https://www.gog.com/forum/gothic_series/highres_font_patch

You can see what it looks like in-game here:

Thank you! Just bought Gothic 2 on GOG and was a little disappointed about the default max resolution. Now I'm playing at 2560 x 1440!
What patch improved the skybox for Gothic 1?
I remember I installed one which made the skybox all electric and s*** due to the barrier, then I didn't touch the game for a while and today I restarted it, and the skybox seems to be vanilla. I wanted to reinstall that patch, but I don't remember which one it was.
All other texture packs still work, it's just the sky that reverted to a simple gray

I used the DX11 + ddraw.dll step in this guide and then installed the texture packs that mmarci mentioned. Gothic 1 now looks amazing!
