But yes, I noticed the Update prompt mentioning "Beta", despite me having unchecked the participate in Beta checkbox in Galaxy 1.2 settings, and the prompt had me chose between "Update" and "Update later". That's pretty much Microsoft newspeak for "Yes" and "Yes". And I haaaaate it, so much.

Triggered by this, I did the research and, sure enough, the forum is full with absolutely fair outrage about it. Reading about how the client is, effectively, still very much a Beta, only confirmed my apprehension to update.

I went ahead and disabled autostart, added "/runWithoutUpdating" to the shortcut, made a backup of the folders, then chopped off any and all files and folders that could be connected to the already downloaded update. In particular, I removed...

C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\Galaxy ...
... \redists\GalaxyUpdater.exe
... \autoupdate
... \autoupdate-verified
... \temp\desktop-galaxy-updater
... \selfupdate.json

If anything breaks, I'll try to restore from my backups. I refuse to use a half baked, clu(s)tterfuck of a client, especially if it's being forced. MY machine, MY realm, GTFO.

Extremely disappointed with GoG right now. I've been with them from the early days and never ever in my entire life accepted or installed Steam, still remember a friend of mine showing it to me when it was new back in the day, and I hated it. It was such a baffling concept to me, "why would anyone, ever"... and here we are.

So, thanks GoG, I hate it.



*Addendum:
Out of curiosity, I exchanged the GalaxyUpdater EXE with the Windows Calculator EXE, just to see how often it would be called. The Calculator popped up a LOT. I deleted it after half a day, but I had to close the calculator about 4 times or so.

Hopefully, that'll help people find what they're looking for quicker than having to search the forum.

Kohleran: Exactly my thinking. If I am forced to use 2.0, I will not use it at all. I have an incredible long backlog of games. More than I could play in my lifetime. GoG will just be saving me money from being enticed to buy the newest shiny, because I'll never see it because I'll not be using Galaxy.
Exactly this. I don't go to the website to check for games, I use the client, full stop. If they force this crappy client it's unlikely I'll buy another game from them for the same reason...I will never see them offered.

Yep, it blows, and is very much still an early beta. I sent my feedback in without even looking at the forums. No surprise, my complaints were pretty much the same as others.

GOG has gone full Steam-tarded with this BS. I wound up here trying to figure out how to gtfo and go back to V1. It wouldn't even close properly, just hung, had to force the application to close "(Win7 just like a lot of you).

I had just made a personal promise to start buying everything I could via GOG to further distance myself from Steam (I couldn't care less about achievements or rank, that's for newer gamers *i.e., didn't grow up playing Atari and Commodore or even classic NES* and kiddies.) but if GOG is going to act like every other stubborn-headed developer and do dumb stuff like this...I'll just stick with Steam because why double my hassle? I would rather support an underdog but not if it's frustrating and they pull the same garbage stunts monopolistic companies pull. Just as soon feed the beast at that (this?) point.

If users start massively canceling pre-orders for Cyberpunk 2077, then developers will understand that it’s better not to annoy their customers

For me, dealing with the mess GOG is making of this by forcing Galaxy 2.0 out before it's ready is less problematic than Valve having spent 6 months now KNOWINGLY CAUSING MEDICAL HARM to their customers with their new client that was forced out before it was ready. They're actively harming people and they've KNOWN about it since a few days after the launch at the absolute LATEST, and have not only failed, but openly REFUSED to take the necessary actions to address the problem.

Users are being forced to revert their Steam client in order to remain healthy and functional. As many mistakes as Galaxy 2.0 is making, it's still a pretty massive step up from that mess.
