FraterPerdurabo: So I'm almost done with XCOM, on the final mission I think. I haven't played any of the previous XCOM / UFO games. Are they worth trying and if yes, then which ones?

doccarnby: I'd pick up the big bundle with all five games, might as well.
Thats what I did too on steam good deal that ;) I did not even wait for a sale

I got them on GamersGate during a sale. It was a great deal, even not on sale.

doccarnby: The original 3: UFO Defense, Terror From the Deep, and Apocalypse. TFtD is brutally hard. Apocalypse is rather different, but still good. Interceptor is, if I remember my uncle talking about it, a decent enough space sim like Wing Commander, but nothing too special. I played a bit of Enforcer. It's fun, but not really a good X-Com game. Not even a good game, at best it's mediocre. I'd pick up the big bundle with all five games, might as well.
Thanks for the tips (and also to SirEyeBall).

But how do they differ from the new one? Will there be a regression in mechanics or so?

they differ a lot if you read this http://www.gog.com/forum/general/xcom_now_the_bureau/post9 I get into it
It's incline that they changed the name. At least for people who bought it, they will not mistake and claim X-COM to be a shooter.

SirEyeball: I love the new x-com; there could be better base building and research + able to sell what you build and the like.
I got the game months after release, so I was able to ask google on day one of play for a tech tree, and there was a great one in the civilization 3 style I was sorely tempted to print out and fold into a pamphlet. But after once through it was pretty much unnecessary. Kind of sad how much of the reasearch you could skip and how things like capturing difficult aliens meant very little (shave a little time of reasearch days).

I rather liked the early videos of this latest shooter. Not sure why it had to be named xcom but I wasn't outraged by it either. It looked like Mafia II with an alien/body snatcher invasion. Better than zombies.

With the name change, their is the obvious nod to the X-Files. And what they did show of XCOM was interesting, though they should have clarified at the time that a proper remake was in the works. Would have killed all the negativity.

It could be interesting, some fun to be had managing an xcom like organization in a first person perspective.

Well, the official website is now gone, trying to access it gives a 404, and all youtube videos have been removed. It looks like a re-branding is going to be in effect.
well good riddance!
If they had announced it THAT way instead of tying it down with the xcom franchise a lot of drama could've been avoided! Fortunately the drama led to the Firaxis title which is awesome, so all ended up being for the best.

well, that title was in production before the drama started. It was just a secret project when all that thing happened. Remember it got unveiled right at the tail-end of it, and it was then already got quite a lot of things in place, it was just a few months before release. It would have happened no matter what...
As a fan of the original XCOM games, (UFO, TFTD and Apocalypse) I don't think any game released since then with the XCOM name was ever really an XCOM game, they just wanted to milk the name and the goodwill of the fans. I'm glad they aren't going to do that in this instance, but when are we going to get a proper XCOM sequel?
So....BETRAYAL!!!! averted? >_>
And an update.

Official names seems to be: The Bureau: XCOM Declassified.

And with it comes a brand new site:

http://www.thebureau-game.com/

and a new (live action) trailer:
