Gothic series, The Book of Unwritten Tales, Panzer Elite, Painkiller, Aquanox 1 and 2, and more, 60% off!

This weekend we've prepared for you a promo featuring some very [url=http://www.gog.com/promo/nordic_games_weekend_promo_140613]Notable Nordic Games! Looking at the catalog of titles available on GOG.com via the publisher Nordic Games, one just cannot miss the fact how exeptional some of them are. Just look! There's one of the most notable RPG sagas. There's one of the FPS games most notable for its old-school gameplay. There's a war game notable for being one of the few tank simulation games. There's an adventure dilogy notable for brilliantly spoofing the fantasy genre as a whole. Everywhere you look--an exceptional game that deserves appreciation. Hence the promo title: Notable Nordic Games. Let's take a quick look at two of them, shall we?

The Book of Unwritten Tales references almost all imaginable popular fantasy worlds, that you visited in your books, movies, and games. It comes in the form of a classic point-and-click adventure with impressive and detailed visuals, quirky characters, and professional voice acting. Whether you're a Terry Pratchett reader, a WoW player, or a fan of Peter Jackson's vision of Lord of The Rings, you'll have a blast discovering all the references the game's creators are making here. On top of that, by the Great Rule Of Fantasy Sagas, so zealously followed by many writers, filmmakers, and game developers, there is a sequel!

The Book of Unwritten Tales: The Critter Chronicles could do just fine by only copying its predecessor. After all--that's what many successful sequels do. The creators, however, made damn sure to give you a plethora of fresh and funny ideas, a cast of new crazy characters, and plenty of previously unseen locations. Both games are available in English and German versions, for Windows and Mac, and the price is only $7.99 for each!

That's merely scratching the surface, of course! Head out to the promo page to browse the full list of games you can grab 60% off until Tuesday, June 18, at 3:59AM GMT.

gandalf.nho: Already have Painkiller and all the Gothic and Spellforce series and adventures aren't my cup of tea. Someone wants try to sell Alien Nations to me?
Ok, I played enough to share my impressions. I enjoy playing Alien Nations but definitely it's not a masterpiece and I'm sure a lot of people won't like it. The game is heavily inspired by Settler 2 and 3.

There are not so many resources because the game focuses on managing your people, not your economy. And I must admit it's the best part of the game. To get new units you have to build new dwellings, after some time a few unqualified transporters will appear. You can send them to school but be careful! You need few of them to transport the goods so you have to train them gradually. You have to feed ALL of your people (not just miners like in S2) and provide some entertainment (taverns, circuses and such). If your citizen are unhappy they will become criminals - they won't pay taxes and start beating other citizens. You need to hire policemen to take care of them.

You can trade with your opponents and in many missions you are actually supposed to use diplomacy rather than brute force. It's also nice because you have a choice.

What's bad with this game then? First: it's awfully slow! Seriously, more advanced buildings, units and research take forever to complete. And second (which is more like a consequence of the first) there are moments when you have absolutely nothing to do. You can watch your people but come on! How long are you going to do that? Do you know how did I cope with it? I was... reading a book. And from time to time I gave new orders. I can accept it, actually I don't mind. But if it bothers you then forget about the game ;)

I cannot say anything about the sequel because I haven't tried it yet but I've heard it's pretty much similar but the micromanaging your people gets even more complex (which sounds very appealing to me)

I hope it will help you to decide whether you want it or not.

graspee: You're not recommending a hack though. No-one will make a crack for a demo, they would just crack the game or upload the game. Who would release a crack for a demo? You're obviously recommending that he torrent the game.

grviper: So? He said, he wanted to demo a $4 game. Got any alternative suggestions?
Watch let's plays on youtube, read reviews and forums.
It's not as good as playing it true, but you seriously cannot recommend piracy. If this were steam forums you would be banned by now for saying that.
Would buy that Forsaken Gothic 3 if it included the soundtrack...

I saw that Settlers comparison in a review and wish listed both of them IMMEDIATELY. I guess I'm a simple man. :P

Fantastic: snip
If you liked the original Spellforce, then you'll like Shadow Wars as well. Dunno about Dragon Storm, haven't played that one yet, but I'm willing to bet it's more of the same.

Be careful ;) Just because the game is inspired by Settlers doesn't mean it matches its quality ;) The game is decent and quite enjoyable but I think after finishing it I won't play it ever again while I replay Settler 2 every two years or so.

NOTHING can match the quality. It's like with Diablo clones. They aren't as good as D but you love the genre and you play them.

If that is so then I think you will enjoy it. Taking care of your people is much better than in Settler 2 so it's a nice diversity...
Update, just got Alien Nations.

What a rip off! No James Caan! No Mandy Patinkin!

It is like your name... Sykes. I'm sure it doesn't bother you at all that it sounds like "ss'ai k'ss," two words in my language which mean excrement and cranium... Shithead.
Spellforce is suppose to be well worth it, and I take it at these prices even more so.

The Nations Gold Edition is from the same series, and usually considered the better game.
