Shaping the future of the fleet.

Wing Commander: Academy, a classic space combat sim that puts you through rigorous training of a Confederation fleet pilot, is available on GOG.com for only $5.99.

Do you have what it takes to be space pilot? Do you think you can handle the Kilrathi, a fierce race of feline space warriors, hell-bent on destroying humankind? If you think you can handle the challenge, there's a chance that you might be what the fleet is looking for. Enlist now, and you'll be promptly transferred to our nearest training facility. You think flying a simulator is beneath you? Well think again! This is no ordinary training. We made damn sure you'll fail, and fail again until you learn from your mistakes. Hell, after we're done with you, you'll welcome fighting the actual Kilrathi as a nice change of pace.

Wing Commander: Academy delivers the excitement and challenge of space combat that has always been the trademark of the Wing Commander series, but this time you will be presented with missions you would never thought possible. You will participate in training simulations that mix and match conditions to prepare future Confederation pilots for just about anything. In the insane Gauntlet mode your task will be to withstand 15 waves of enemies, each more difficult than the last one. There's also a diverse mission creator at your disposal, presenting you with unlimited scenarios that will test your skill. Oh, and yes--this is the 600th game in GOG.com catalog, and yes--you can take it as a confirmation of even more Wing Commander titles coming our way in the future.

The Kilrathi menace won't just go away. Answer your destiny's call and take your part in securing the future of mankind in Wing Commander: Academy, for only $5.99 on GOG.com!

hunvagy: and if it comes, I'd suggest grabbing this: Movie Pack

Just scroll down for the upgrade packs to have all the cutscenes in their high definition glory. Of course only if they won't be included in the GOG release.
GOG should really look into using these high-res videos when they release the game, could add a lot of value to the product
Is this the "game inspired by a forever war" that was hinted in TET's instagram poem?

Not sure, but I doubt it. The rest of the Wing Commander games were already confirmed, so I do hope that instagram hints were referring to other games.
Vote for the rest of the series on the wishlist!

Super Wing Commander (1994)
Wing Commander: Armada (1994)
Privateer 2: The Darkening (1996)
Wing Commander: The Kilrathi Saga (1996)
Wing Commander V: Prophecy (1997)
Wing Commander: Arena (2007)

I must have stumbled into an alternate reality as something in my mind is convinced this was already released here long ago. :/
A bit off topic: I never played any of WC series and only discovered it at GOG. I´m interested in though (I love shmup´s and I´m thinking in trying "fps shmup"). So, which one do you reccomend start? I was grabbed by the WC III screenshots, but I fear is not good as it looks or I lose something important in the WC I & II. Thanks.

Actually, the answer might be yes: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/12grru/i_am_chris_roberts_creator_of_wing_commander/c6uxpd6

AFAIR Thunderscape was also confirmed before instagram hints so I wouldn't expect anything else from "forever war" hint ;)

My personal favorites still are Wing Commander 2 - for its story (WC1 has barely any to speak of), some good extra helping of missions, and general better performance over its predecessor - and Privateer, which is still my all-time favorite Elite-style game. WC3 isn't bad but if it wasn't for it's FMV cutscenes it wouldn't be all that; for some reason I wasn't that fond of its gameplay. *shrug*

One of these days I'll have to try my hand at WC4 again. Tried playing it earlier this year, but its ridiculous difficulty, in comparison to earlier games, really put me off. I find it funny how they were touting its use of real film sets so much at the time of its release, but somehow the environments ended up looking more bland than its CG counterparts from WC3.

Not sure whether I'm interested in Academy, which seems too bare-bones; if I want Gauntlet mode all I have to do is boot up the simulator cabinet in any of the WC main games, anyway. Armada seems like a better choice, but I don't know by how much. Haven't played either one of these. I'm looking forward to Privateer 2 (even if it's not supposed to be as good as the original) and Prophecy though.

Academy is kinda 'ehh'. It was cool at the time, but I didn't use it much even then. Armada on the other hand, was a lot of fun; one of the few games I got to play over the modem with one of my friends.

Any one know if they'll have some form of support for multi-player over the net for Armada?

Foxhack: Credit card + PayPal = happy tburger
Well I'm rather reluctant to set up yet another account - especially under this, say, abnormal circumstances. But if this will be persistent - well I'll probably go for this option.

Incidentally few questions about PP: in PP do I link my card to account and money is drawn directly from card or I have to transfer money to PP account? How does PP looks in terms of conversion rates, fees etc? Does PP accept debit cards also or only CC?

I'm not sure what you mean. The instagram posting was hints for 4 classic game releases that would happen before the end of summer.

Thunderscape was the "thundering great RPG".

The war in the Wing Commander series seemed to go on for quite a while, so I thought that it might qualify for the "game inspired by a forever war."

I don't know if that guess is right or not, but there are 3 more "classic" games based on hints in the instagram post beyond Thunderscape.

Now I don't understand what you mean ;) Let's summarize it: my point of view:
- thundering great RPG = Thunderscape
- forever war = Wing Commander (JMich doubted about it and I only explained that both games were confirmed before instagram)
- And that leaves only 2, not 3 more classic games
