Here to take your breath away.

Strike Commander, an action-oriented modern-day mercenary jet fighter combat simulation from Chis Roberts, the creator of Wing Commander--DRM-free on GOG.com, for only $5.99

In this troubled world, the only place I ever feel free is up here, among the clouds. Blasting through the sky at supersonic speed, looking at the world, so small, way, way down, I'm immortal. You can't take that away from me if you try. In fact, I dare you to try. Come and challenge me. Come and challenge any of us. We're the Wildcats, the elite. There's nothing we can't do, up here. God made a mistake of not giving us wings. That didn't stop us. Neither will you.

Strike Commander was often called " on Earth"</i>, because in the game you take the role of a mercenary pilot hired to perform various missions in the times of global unrest. The action takes place in the year 2011, which was considered near-future at the time of game's development. Just as in the stellar [url=http://www.gog.com/gamecard/wing_commander_1_2]Wing Commander series, a good part of the plot is being delivered via cut-scenes, briefings, and sections representing every day life in a paramilitary base that hauses a squad of hired guns. The simulated combat is action-oriented and satisfying, and the story of elite pilot squad taking on the world full of injustice and violence is compelling and well-executed. Our release of the game includes the Tactical Operations expansion and the extended Speech Pack, as well as rare documents such as the playtester's guide and an in-depth strategy guide.

The sky is yours in Strike Commander, for only $5.99 on GOG.com. Godspeed, flyboy (or flygirl)!
sounds interesting, wishlisted for now

tburger: Bought it yesterday...and was stunned by the volume of manuals/strategy guides..They sure knew how to publish games back in 90s :-)

tarasis: Agreed, I still have print copies of the manuals in my study. It's a shame they lost the art of doing these sort of manuals & mini books.
Origin games always had excellent content in the box with manuals that provided some backstory and really did a good job in making the game so much more interesting, check out the Ultima and Wing Commander games too.

I miss the days of the big boxes (although a lot of them didn't contain much).

timppu: I already own some CD-version of this game, and at least I don't recall it having audio CD music (tracks)... so what kind of music support does this GOG version have? I hope it is at least trivial to change to music to MT-32, for those who wish to use it.

I don't recall if it had General MIDI music support too, and whether that was worth anything...
Using install.exe I could set music to GM and it sounds ok to me.
I was also able to set ROLAND/LAPC - with munt on real maschine. Haven't noticed any sound distortion but truth to be told it was a real quick check.
In both cases for sound effects I picked SoundBlaster Pro.

EDIT: also no CD tunes.

romantho: Mac release?
You could just run the files in Boxer, since it is a DOS title. http://boxerapp.com/
As far as I know, that's what GOG does, though they provide the convenience of just clicking a few times.
I feel like plugging this release, since it didn't get nearly as much enthusiasm as Wing Commander. It's a great action game.

The graphics are old and low res, but the planes looked fantastic when it came out. It blows away all the old flat polygon sims that came before it.

There's a lot of mission variety, the story is fun, and you can customize a ton of settings to make flight and combat forgiving or sort of realistic. You can control the entire flight or use autopilot for avoiding runways and travel time.

There's a big emphasis on dogfighting rather than relying on distant missile kills, so you get to see what you're shooting down. Enemies range from outdated to modern fighters, from cargo planes to bombers and AWACS planes. There's never a lack of variety. There are also many ground attack missions, including a few where you're providing air support to friendly tanks fighting enemies. There are even a few strikes against carrier groups.

The music adapts to what's happening and fits like a glove. The voice acting is standard for Origin's voiced games.

You won't like it if you can't get past the visuals or if planes aren't your thing. But don't write it off for being a flight sim. It has the same great combat balance that made Wing Commander so much fun, and the all-around presentation and attention to detail we grew to expect from Origin.
