Strike Commander, an action-oriented modern-day mercenary jet fighter combat simulation from Chis Roberts, the creator of Wing Commander--DRM-free on GOG.com, for only $5.99

In this troubled world, the only place I ever feel free is up here, among the clouds. Blasting through the sky at supersonic speed, looking at the world, so small, way, way down, I'm immortal. You can't take that away from me if you try. In fact, I dare you to try. Come and challenge me. Come and challenge any of us. We're the Wildcats, the elite. There's nothing we can't do, up here. God made a mistake of not giving us wings. That didn't stop us. Neither will you.

Strike Commander was often called " on Earth"</i>, because in the game you take the role of a mercenary pilot hired to perform various missions in the times of global unrest. The action takes place in the year 2011, which was considered near-future at the time of game's development. Just as in the stellar [url=http://www.gog.com/gamecard/wing_commander_1_2]Wing Commander series, a good part of the plot is being delivered via cut-scenes, briefings, and sections representing every day life in a paramilitary base that hauses a squad of hired guns. The simulated combat is action-oriented and satisfying, and the story of elite pilot squad taking on the world full of injustice and violence is compelling and well-executed. Our release of the game includes the Tactical Operations expansion and the extended Speech Pack, as well as rare documents such as the playtester's guide and an in-depth strategy guide.

The sky is yours in Strike Commander, for only $5.99 on GOG.com. Godspeed, flyboy (or flygirl)!

JMich: More EA goodness, and still at $5.99

Also love the "Go to barracks" picture...
How do you manage to always be the first (when you're not doing the announce yourself) to post in the 'new release threads'. Did gog ask your permission before releasing a new gem ?

edit : or is it just the master ninja bear effect ?

Heh. I kinda want to see that happening, now.
I for one refuse to play any modern jet fighter sim that doesn't involve me getting my ass killed every time I try to land on the fu&%ing carrier! :P

Everyone in their mid to late 30s is laughing their ass off at that right now.

I'm not in my mid-to-late 30s yet but I know exactly what you mean. Accomplish mission, return home, survive crash landing and receive medals - it's the MicroProse way.

Psyringe: I guess I could have gathered more information from one of the two computer game magazines that existed at this time (one started in 1990, the other in 1992), but that would have meant waiting a month or longer, and we actually didn't even have a newspaper kiosk in our village.
The ASM already existed since 1986 in Germany.
O.o

EDIT:
Regarding carrier landings I can recommend:
F-14 Fleet Defender
Flight of the Intruder

The release time usually coincides with the downtime at the office, when most people go to grab a bite. Thus I am (usually) at ease to browse and see the new releases, and since the posts ain't visible in the forums until at least one comments, I do post a comment to increase the visibility.

The GOG bears are assassin bears actually, not sure how friendly they are with the ninja bears.

Abuse is freeware... Or is this another game than the one I'm thinking ?

Yes, but the ASM tried to cover all existing systems (Amiga, PC, Mac, several different consoles), so it was of very limited use if you wanted information about one specific game. The chance that one of the few PC game reviews covered the game that you were looking for was just too small. Since the major part of that magazine was useless for us PC enthusiasts, we never bought it, and I had actually forgotten about it until your link jogged my memory. ;)

I actually checked, and couldn't find any indication that Strike Commander has been reviewed by the ASM (though I guess that the database isn't complete).

I _did_ find Strike Commander reviews in two other magazines (one of which I never heard about ;) ), but the thing is, both of those reviews were from the June issues, so they were published in the second half of May. I had ordered Strike Commander in April, when my mail order distributor imported it from the US. That's why I said getting a review from a games magazine would have taken a month or longer.
