Strike Commander, an action-oriented modern-day mercenary jet fighter combat simulation from Chis Roberts, the creator of Wing Commander--DRM-free on GOG.com, for only $5.99

In this troubled world, the only place I ever feel free is up here, among the clouds. Blasting through the sky at supersonic speed, looking at the world, so small, way, way down, I'm immortal. You can't take that away from me if you try. In fact, I dare you to try. Come and challenge me. Come and challenge any of us. We're the Wildcats, the elite. There's nothing we can't do, up here. God made a mistake of not giving us wings. That didn't stop us. Neither will you.

Strike Commander was often called " on Earth"</i>, because in the game you take the role of a mercenary pilot hired to perform various missions in the times of global unrest. The action takes place in the year 2011, which was considered near-future at the time of game's development. Just as in the stellar [url=http://www.gog.com/gamecard/wing_commander_1_2]Wing Commander series, a good part of the plot is being delivered via cut-scenes, briefings, and sections representing every day life in a paramilitary base that hauses a squad of hired guns. The simulated combat is action-oriented and satisfying, and the story of elite pilot squad taking on the world full of injustice and violence is compelling and well-executed. Our release of the game includes the Tactical Operations expansion and the extended Speech Pack, as well as rare documents such as the playtester's guide and an in-depth strategy guide.

The sky is yours in Strike Commander, for only $5.99 on GOG.com. Godspeed, flyboy (or flygirl)!

Fakum12: Is the Speech-Pack the limited floppy version or is this the full CD-Rom version?
Full CD-ROM version :D
Third time in three weeks that GOG starts selling a game I purchased earlier.

Goddamnit.
OMG! Thanks GOG Team. You've just mad me have a happy cry.

Awesome, thanks for the quick reply.
I was wondering when this game would come to gog. :)

Psyringe: I bought the original for 170 German Marks (about 85 €, or more if you correct for inflation), thinking it was a Wing Commander spinoff. Then it turned out to be a pseudo-military flying game on Earth.

Crispy78: Erm, did you buy it with your eyes closed?
This was back in 1993. ;) I lived in tiny village with a total population of less than 900 people, had no car, the next stores that even bothered to offer computer games were 15 kilometers away and had a very limited selection (usually only German versions of games, and rarely new releases). We used to buy newly released games by mail order, and you couldn't just google for information about a game because the Internet simply didn't exist yet. I didn't even know how the cover looked like because the mail order service sent its price lists as lots of tiny text on cheap paper. There were no images, let alone color.

I didn't have any information about the game except the name, and the fact that it was made by the same team that had done the Wing Commander games, which my friends and me were extremely fond of.

I guess I could have gathered more information from one of the two computer game magazines that existed at this time (one started in 1990, the other in 1992), but that would have meant waiting a month or longer, and we actually didn't even have a newspaper kiosk in our village.

I know it sounds incredibly backward compared to today, but that's how we bought games back then.

Ha! Yeah, I guess things have changed a lot since then...

You should definitely give the game another go. If you liked Wing Commander then you should like it - it's basically just Wing Commander with some ground in the way... ;)

Excellent! For those unaware, the CD-ROM edition had an improved engine with much better performance. I still have my CD copy, but I may just pick this up during the start of the next month.

Thanks GOG!!

Elmofongo: Is this the last of Origin's games?
You mean like in "will GOG provide any more Origin games throughout the next weeks?" or like in "are there any Origin games left?" or like in "is this the latest Origin game?".

The second one and of course excluding Ultima Online is there any Origin Games left for GOG to get?

Nope, GOG have yet to touch any of Origin's 80's games. I'm guessing because they are all inferior on DOS and they aren't sure if they would sell.

Quite a few. There was two *kinda* sequels to Strike Commander titled Wings of Glory and Pacific Strike. They take place in WW1 and WW2 and are therefore unrelated plot-wise but they are very similar in concept.

Then there's multiple Wing Commander games left like Wing Commander Academy, Armada, Privateer 2 and of course Prophecy (only the last two of which were really big releases).

Then there's of course System Shock as well as a few other titles which aren't part of any big famous series.

Actually most notable Origin games missing from GOG are from the mid to late 90's (see above), most of which would probably sell very well (especially the missing Wing Commander games and System Shock).

Ultima's don't count?

Of course they still have to release the rest of the Wing Commander games, the original System Shock and I'm sure there's plenty of other things that they released in the '90s as well.

Oh sorry, brain error, I meant the standalone Origin titles, not the big series'.
Just keep the Origin goodness coming and we won't have any problems, GOG. ; )
