Never Deal with a Dragon!

Shadowrun Returns, a classy turn-based RPG set in one of the most iconic Sci-Fi worlds where cyberpunk meets fantasy, sporting excellent character development mechanics and a sleek visual style drawing you right into the dark and dangerous Seattle metroplex, is available 40% off on GOG.com, for Windows and Mac OS X. That's $11.99 for the first 48 hours.

People will tell you about the word "Shadowrun". They'll explain that it describes the act of falling off the grid to perform some shady doings for a power that prefers to stay anonymous. Like one corporation trying to silently eliminate some key "assets" of another. Or a high-profile magician in need of some fresh virgin blood. Or the law going after someone that would normally be out of their reach, because of that whole corpo-extraterritoriality thing. Get it? That kind of stuff. But I'll tell you this man, I think that's not where the word originates. I've been around for a long time, and I've seen some things no one was ever supposed to see. I know things that you generally wouldn't want to know. Dangerous, that kind of knowledge, a health hazard if you catch my drift. So, believe me when I tell you: it's not actually "shadowrun". It's "shadow-run". A word describing the true hierarchy of power in our good old sixth world. This whole planet is now being run by shadows whose motivation and goals guys like you and me won't ever understand. I don't even mean the dragons. There's something else out there. Something… different.

Shadowrun Returns, a single player, turn-based tactical RPG taking place in a fan-favorite cyberpunk slash fantasy setting. Enter the amazingly depicted futuristic Seattle metroplex, and embark on your mission to uncover the mystery of a series of gruesome killings. Who knows what you'll discover? In the world of Shadowrun nothing is what it seems at first glance. With deep and involving storyline, top-notch turn-based tactical combat mechanics, and deep skill-based character development system, this vibrant imaginative role-playing game just keeps on giving!

Whether you are a die-hard fan of the pen&paper predecessor, or you're just looking for an extensive computer RPG experience, you can't go wrong with Shadowrun Returns, for only 11.99 on GOG.com. The 40% off release discount offer last for 48 hours only, that's until Thursday, December 12, at 10:59AM GMT.

DoctorGOGgles: Will instabuy this the moment the Linux version is included...
Regarding the official site there is no Linux version existing.
This looks great. Never heard about it. I will definitely pick this one up. Not sure, though, if I should use the release discount...

Barry_Woodward: Will Harebrained Schemes be giving Kickstarter backers a code for the game on GOG?
Yeap, wondering that as well.

Crosmando: So will this be on sale for Christmas again, lower than 40%?
avatar
gandalf.nho: Probably not, is a december release and these don't enter the christmas sales (like Theme Park yesterday)
To be fair, they specifically mentioned it on that one yet not on this one, and this one has been out on Steam for a while already and has even had some sales already.

? on the Steam page it says:

"Linux System Requirements
Minimum:
Processor: x86-compatible 1.4GHz or faster processor
Memory:2 GB RAM
Graphics:Modern 3D graphics card with at least 256MB of addressable memory
Hard Drive:2 GB HD space"

so there is a Linux version there.

i don't like to link to steam, but the steam store officially shows a linux version for shadow run returns too, so...
As someone who loved the original SNES Shadowrun title, this is one I'm going to definitely check out.
YEEEES! YES! YES! YES!

This is how this game should have been released first time around: although I´ve backed it (and got Steam key, which I did not want) - I´m buying.

Holy decker, if they were able to get in at least partial save-system, this would be blast!
This'll pair nicely with Theme Park. *sigh* So long, money.
Nice to see it released on gog, but I'm curious what'll happen with the new expansion when it hits in early 2014. Will it be added right away, or should I get this title on steam instead?
Posting my would-be review here since it's 3:54 in the morning, my eyes feel like I just beat someone at bobbing for chili flakes and while I love the good people at GOG, the popup saying my review is too long can go suck a big fat one.

I wanted to like this one. I really did.
After years of reading the pen and paper books, after playing the SNES version, seeing that a new version of Shadowrun was coming really made me happy.
If only it had been more.
If you want to get maximum enjoyment out of this title, don't think of it as "Shadowrun". Think of it as "Well, I can burn a few hours with this and stop when every cell in my body starts screaming out in unison with an infernal MEHHHHHHHHHHHHHH and shuts it off".
For something with so much potential, for something with several housefuls of source material to work with, it did a fantastic job of being mediocre as all hell.
How are the graphics? Well, they're....okay.
How's the sound? Well, it doesn't make me want to puncture my eardrums with an icepick, if that counts for anything.
How's the gameplay? Bland, with occasional jaunts into full-in boring as crap. After you sit through your decker playing shot-for-shot with enemy programs, like a crappy tennis match of follow the bouncing turn indicator, it gets very very old, very very fast.
How's the story? Had potential, but even that turned into one big blob of half-assed nonsense, especially if you've read enough of the pen and paper books to know a bit about the key players. As soon as I saw the group mentioned, I thought to myself "Well, that's where we're going with this, sure as anything", and I was right. Anyone who's played the game at length and read what I have will come to the same conclusion in about two point two nanoseconds, making an extremely linear experience worse since you know exactly what's waiting for you at the end of it all.
How's the gameplay? See the aforementioned back and forth tennis match comparison. Also, if you go in thinking like it's Shadowrun, you're going to come out not enjoying yourself very much.
In total, if you're looking for something to play for a while as an idle timekiller, you could do worse, even with all my complaints.
But it could have been SO MUCH better.

Telika: Is this an RPG in the sense of being an RPG, or is it Fallout Tactics ?
avatar
JudasIscariot: A little bit of both actually :)

You have the tactical combat (roll) but you can also decide how you wish to play your part (role) :D
'kay.

Also skimmed through the totalbiscuit video, he mentions a lot of lot of (decent) writing, so this may also hint at something RPGey. He draws parallels with fallout and such, and although I'm not sure the game's linearity allows such comparisons, it's still reassuring a bit.
Does this come with the editor ? And what about the official expansions. Will they be on GOG too ?
Damn, I bought it on Steam just because devs said it won't be available DRM-free.
Too late, GOG, I got it during the sales on Steam... Oh, I know you're not the ones to blame, since it's the devs that really have the power to greenlight the release here on GOG, but it's a damn shame to me, because as much as I love GOG and games, I'm not rich enough to buy the same game twice just to support you... :'(
