There's a man who leads a life of danger.

Secret Agent, a classic Apogee platformer from the EGA-era, with elaborate level design and a licence to kill, is available on GOG.com, for only $5.99

You are Agent 006½, the agency's top man specializing in impossible missions. This game tells the story of three such tasks. Over the course of three episodes--The Hunt for Red Rock Rover, Kill Again Island, andDr. No Body--you will infiltrate enemy bases, eliminate designated targets, avoid detection, and steal top secret plans. Well, either that, or you'll run, jump, and shoot your way through in a flashy, camp environment full of platforms, traps and puzzles. Might be more of the latter, than the first.

Secret Agent is a run-and-jump platformer as classic as they get. Released in 1992 by Apogee Software it uses the previously tested mechanics and engine of the Crystal Caves but adds spy pulp-novel setting to the picture. The game sports large, cleverly designed levels filled with traps and puzzles. There are secret bonuses to find on every stage and a varied cast of enemies--ranging from ninjas to robots--to either avoid or eliminate as you carry out your secret mission.

The odds are you won't live to see tomorrow, but isn't risk the spice of life for a Secret Agent? The licence to kill is now only $5.99 on GOG.com!

tinyE: Ummm, Keen is on here? Where? And I agree it's a great game.

Charon121: I never sait it was on here. Just my favourite platformer overall. ;) I wish it was, though. I played that game to death back in the early 90s, when I was a kid. I felt very smart when I figured out how to break the final machine in the fifth instalment. :D
My missunderstanding. No harm was intended. :) The football helmet he wore always reminded me of Easy Rider which is why it always was a special game for me.

fortune_p_dawg: Duke 1+2 all the way!

tinyE: :) Thanks but I was actually refering to the recent rash of them. DK is a classic but (while I don't personally have it) I've certainly played it enough and it seems to pop up wherever you go. Some of these other, like SA and Hocus Pocus, I've either never heard of or barely heard of so I was more interested in a take on those.
In that case, I've always liked Realms of Chaos despite it's imprecise platforming.

See now THAT is the one I am most curious about. What do you mean "imprecise platforming"? Normally I hate to judge a book by it's cover but RoC LOOKS really cool to me.

It is cool, but I hated it at first. As a kid (maybe 13 or 14) I only played the shareware version which came on the Duke Nukem 3D disc. I'd always uninstall it, after dying a billion times, but one day I did it and I thought "hmm, that wasn't so bad" and then they flashed some stills of the full game up on the screen displaying colorful Western-fanstasy inspired pixel art and I was all "damn, I want this now."

So now I have it. It's still frustrating, due largely to not being able to gauge jump distance, it it has a certain plucky charm.

ZivilSword: Hm, I just downloaded the first episode of Secret Agent free from 3drealms.com, and what can I say, the game is definitely not easy. You’d need many many tries to get the jumps correct, shoot the enemies, get around traps etc. I don’t believe I finished almost all levels 20 years ago. I must have had way more time when I was young …
On the contrary, I blazed through the first episode as if it even wasn't there, but the second episode is much harder for me.

klaymen: Snip..
I'm finding chapter 3 significantly harder than 2, in a good way.
How hard is it relative to other platformers?

Now I have something to look forward to after finishing the second episode. :)
