Become a Tri-System Confederation legend!

Privateer 2: The Darkening, an epic-scaled space trade and combat sim from the cult-classic Wing Commander series, with full motion video sequences starring Christopher Walken, John Hurt, and Clive Owen, is available on GOG.com, for only $5.99. At the same time, we offer you a chance to expand your collection of Wing Commander titles, with our special 48-hour Wing Commander Series Promo!

This was not a pleasant reality to wake up to. They told you you've survived a crash which totaled your spacecraft. You can't really remember anything. You're not even quite sure if you belong in the Tri-System. All you have, is the feeling that this isn't the first time you've bounced back from falling to the bottom. You still have just enough currency to afford some flying rust-bucket. It'll do. As long as you have wings, you'll manage, somehow. There always are business opportunities for skilled pilots--dirty jobs that bring good money. A few runs and you'll be able to afford some upgrades, or maybe even a better ship. You'll gain recognition. Fame, even. Somehow, it feels like this all isn't happening for the first time. If only you could recall what dangers await bold pilots in this corner of Universe...

Privateer 2: The Darkening isn't a direct sequel to Wing Commander: Privateer, but rather a completely different adventure in a remote part of the universe governed by the Tri-System Confederation. In fact, there are some hints that both games take place in roughly the same time period, but the different settings give each of them its unique feeling. Originally released in 1996, the game offers solid open-ended space trade and combat mechanics, multitude of original missions to take on, an involving story, and full motion video cut-scenes featuring a cast of a-grade actors. If you long for the sensation of piloting your own star ship and living the space-privateer life on your own terms, make sure not to miss this classic title!

Set your helm for the Tri-System and experience a space adventure of yet another lifetime in Privateer 2: The Darkening, for only $5.99 on GOG.com! Don't forget about the Wing Commander Series Promo, as well, because it lasts only until Saturday, September 21, at 9:59AM GMT.

ZivilSword: ... Hm, I could not get my (German) version of Privateer 2 running properly. Either the fights were too slow (or get slow when too much action is on screen), or the fights are fine but the menu system runs like the devil and is quite unusable. You can’t provide me with your DOSBox config by chance, can you? ...
There is a german version and GOG doesn't have it. I definitely should be less surprised than I am but I still am.

For the problem with your config file maybe you can ask somebody else (not me). As you already paid the publisher at some point (probably more) ...

JudasIscariot: No, I don't think I can just go about giving out dosbox.conf files :P
I thought so, but questions are free. :)

About the interlacing, that’s still there, isn’t it?

avatar
Crosmando: Goddamn interlacing, is there any known way to fix it?
It may be possible because in Wing Commander 3 and 4 this could be deactivated (AFAIR). Privateer 2 was released some months later but it seems they have forgotten such a command line switch. Damn, the videos are so good but I think only Chris Roberts owns the original videotapes. He should release a Privateer 2 HD version, but Star Citizen is more important for him.

The contract with EA only covers the international English version. I still bought Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri e.g. because the German language files and audio samples are free to download. But for P2 I don’t think I am allowed to upload 2GB of video sequences. ;)

I paid like 10 Euros for the original version, and that was ten years ago. It is still sold on Ebay for the same price.

Not sure as I haven't personally fired up the game yet :)

Unfortunately, yes. :/ Looks pretty bad on current screens, I'm afraid.

I have to say the lines looks pretty bad in full-screen.

I don't suppose there's any chance of you guys being able to dig around in the DOS files or something to see if it's possible to deactivate it or something?

This may or may not be relevant: http://www.gog.com/forum/wing_commander_series/video_segments_have_black_horizontal_bars_running_through_them/post6

I recall a post somewhere mentioning higher quality videos on the Wing Commander fan site, ripped straight from a VHS, but I don't know if anybody has tried to implement those into the game.
Nice release GOG, an oldie for the oldie :) A question, Does anyone know if Warhead was ever released for the PC?
Bought this, isn't showing up in my purchased items.

Roman5: Nice to have more EA games here but I'm still waiting for Command and Conquer, Westwood goodness in general and beasts and bumpkins
Why is this low rated?

It's probably because Roman5 feels the childish need to make the first post in any new release thread. Because it would take too long to write anything useful, he often makes an empty placeholder "first" post which he later edits to make it look as if he actually had something to say about the release.

An interesting theory, unfortunately it doesn't work in this case because other forum posters do the exact same thing and even worse and they do not get downrepped

Long story short: There are a couple of very butthurt people on this forum who will downrep me no matter what

That's basically it in a nutshell

Yeah it's relevant, changing aspect ratio to false seems to fix the black lines during the movies.

Probably because even if the game is 4:3, the movies are 16:9 and if you have aspect false, it streches the 16:9 movies correctly on your wide screen monitor.
InstaBuy.

A big "Thank You!" to EA and gOg for this release.
Awesome! Any new title from the original "Origin" is always welcomed here :) Very nice release.
