Survival of the sweetest.

Long Live the Queen, a complex political thriller full of violence, hate, and tough choices, masked by deceptively cute visuals, is available on GOG.com for only $9.99.

Long Live the Queen is a brutal game. Your heroine will try to escape the many dangers awaiting a young heiress to the throne, and will often fail, ending up dead, leaving the kingdom at mercy of it's many enemies. Luckily, you'll be able to back up on your mistakes, probably just to witness another death of the princess. When you're but a child, suddenly burdened by the crushing weight of responsibility, every little decision you make might prove to be your last. This complex and challenging royalty sim will crush your hopes many times, before you manage to protect the princess until the day of her coronation. There are secret plots at play, invaders at the gates, dark magical forces hiding in plain sight, assassins lurking in the shadows, and way too many suitors trying to get their hands on the young heiress' heritage. With non-linear gameplay, and great depth this cute-looking title will take even the most experienced gamer by surprise!

If you thought that the life of a princess is full of bliss, ballroom dancing, cotton candy, and ponies, it's about time you faced the terrifying truth in Long Live the Queen, for only $9.99 on GOG.com.

Wishbone: what you are presenting is a game with the same graphical style as hentai
avatar
RaggieRags: It always makes me sad to see people automatically connecting anime with hentai. Every genre is explored with this art style. It's like looking down on movies because porn films exist.
Thanks for pointing that out. It seems many here are pre-judging this game based on its presumed nature.

Being an otaku of 15 years who watches anime on Funimation and Crunchyroll with his wife WHO LOVES ANIME AS MUCH AS HE DOES (if not more), this game might be her dream come true for a site that's tailored specifically to games with a western art style.

Things to note for everyone:

1.) This is not hentai. It just has a sense of humor.
2.) Hanako games makes games for girls, primarily. Which is just as unique as this games style: http://www.hanakogames.com/about.shtml , but I imagine many guys have loved it (Judas is a guy, after all...I think O_o), just as many girls have played the titles off of GOG already, even if not tailored to them.
3.) If your reading this and you would at least give the game a shot, there's a free demo on their website: http://www.hanakogames.com/llq.shtml
4.) Some people who are gawking at this probably love Leisure Suit Larry, yet those are probably dirtier than this.
5.) There is absolutely no other game like this here. I would love to see GOG cater to a new crowd, and not throw out that possibility based on negative feelings purely based on an art style and non-existent overtones.
6.) Generalizing this game in a negative, stereotypical fashion is like judging a woman to not be good at anything but raising kids, house chores, and the kitchen (I cook and clean a lot, by the way).
7.) It's an instabuy for me, and I know my wife will love this kind of game.

Thanks for the release GOG and I hope you keep adding games like this.

Wishbone: You know, repeating yourself here will not make the game card any less misleading for new readers. I know what you've said. I believe what you've said. What does that have to do with anything?
avatar
zlep: The outcry here isn't predominantly about the game card being misleading; it's about the game being tasteless, sexual, and probably involving pedophilia. I'd say that JudasIscariot's comment is pretty much the final word on that, so pretty on-topic...
Uhm, no. That was only the first 20-or-so posts. After Judas made it clear that the game did not in fact contain any of those things, the discussion has been about the presentation. And of course the usual flaming bouts between the pro-manga and anti-manga camps.

Kunovski: a technical question - is it possible to win the game with EVERY style? or is there only one good ending?
The game is pretty much open-ended, and any approach you take might lead to victory, as long as you're really, really, really, really, really super-careful along the way ;-)

HiPhish: Judging by the image on the front page I have a feeling I will have to delete my browser history and cache after i click the the game's card...

zlep: Umm... both the banner ad and the "latest headlines" pic look just like one of those Japanese cartoons (Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, etc) aimed at eight year old girls. Do you also feel the need to delete your browser history after looking at a picture of a Disney princess?

I realize the game isn't aimed at that audience, but honestly, you couldn't tell that from the front page pictures. If anything it looks like a kids game. I get the feeling lots of people here haven't seen any recent cartoons, and have only viewed anime-style art in porn. :-(
Disney princesses are not drawn in miniskirts from an angle that looks like they have no underwear. I know this is not a porn game, there is no way GoG would be selling such, but it sure does look like it's made for "weird" people. If i walked into a store an bought a DVD of a Disney movie no one would care, but if I bought an anime DVD with a front cover like Long Live the Queen, I would get all sorts of creeped out stares. (of course I won't delete my browser history, I was ust being over the top, but the point still remains)

Whatever the decision was to choose this type of aesthetic, the person must have been aware that people, at least in Europe, will perceive upskirt shots of a 14 year old girl, who looks like she's ten, to be just wrong.

npalsensei: Your comment pretty much sums up what's wrong with people, so I'll expand on your post a bit because there are a number of comments in here that gave me cancer.
avatar
jamotide: You people are just as bad. Maybe we don't have problems with porn, but we just don't want characters to look like 6 year olds because we just hate kids?
:-) Nah, the giveaway is that most child haters don't immediately think "death by octopus" looks like tentacle rape.

Soo, any chance you dark mages of GOG can convince Gainax to release Princess Maker 2 here? :p

Princess Maker! yes we need that!

Huh, I thought that screenshot is about getting offspring, kinda like a stork bringing it, thats what they tell small kids here when they arent old enough to know the disgusting truth.
Whoa Long Live the Queen! here on GOG! Now this is a instabuy. Thanks GOG for getting this here. :)

That's just as a big assumption as saying that people wouldn't think you're a pedo for buying this game.

edit for making my point clearer :p

Okay, let's do a fact check (tm) ;)

The game is released with:

- A 242 word presentation, none of those touching sexual stuff
- A 168 word gamecard, none of those touching sexual stuff
- A 1:37 trailer showing intrigue, diplomacy, murder, and no sexual stuff
- 12 screenshots, of which:
-- 9 show no sexual content at all, but character development and strategic/tactical decisions
-- 1 shows a giant squid killing the princess. Whoever sees "sexual content" there should perhaps look again, and ask him/herself if it's really there, or if it merely happened in his/her mind due to automatically equating "squid" and "anime graphics" with "tentacle hentai".
-- 1 shows a remark about "big breasts" as a result of a [i]failed flattery check[i]. I don't want to live in a world including the word "breast" in a game in that way is offensive - do you?
-- 1 shows a funny remark about an affair, which may or may not have taken place in the game, and which - if you look up other information about the game - could insinuate an "affair" (whatever that might mean exactly) between a 31-year old guy and a 14-year old princess. With the information given, it's impossible to say more about this. If the mere thought is so offputting for you that you won't touch the game for the mere possibility of it containing the stuff that your mind suspects there, that's fine. But given the other information that is available about this game, don't you think that it might warrant a further check?

Anyway. I _can_ see one thing: If you stumble across a forum thread that talks about sexual content in this game, and then, after being primed that way, take a look at some screenshots while not paying much attention to the game's description, other screenshots, and trailer, I can see how one's mind might draw some weird connections about sexual content. So let's not condemn the people who did that.

But after looking at the facts, I really don't see much evidence that that assumed offensive content is actually there.

Ah a princess maker type game. Might be tempted by this for those times when I don't want to dig out the Super Famicom to play Princess Maker...

Now all we need here is Shira Oka. That game deserves more coverage.
Anyone saying that the protagonist "looks 6 years old" is exaggerating and needs to think before they speak.

If this game had a gritty and realistic art style, or perhaps was a big mess of early 1990's pixels, and had less Japanese style humor then it would be getting universally applauded as an intriguing royalty simulator where all your decisions feel like they have real weight to them.

But no, again people are quick to judge a book by it's cover. The breast comment is very obviously meant in jest and not something to be taken seriously. Also it's something being said by the protagonist so it factually can't be a case of pedophilia even if it was serious. The tentacle seen is very clearly a parody or perhaps a thought bubble of some kind, the chibi art style in that scene is a dead give away. And it was literally the every day norm for young girls to be wed at the age of 14 or even younger in the middle ages. But again if the graphics had been less anime then people would say the game "wasn't afraid of pushing some boundaries" and was just "being realistic."

Just a few days ago didn't we have a couple guys getting pissed at the government shutdown sale? And what was everyone's reaction? They told those big babies to calm down. And yet here the tables seem to be turned, and it's yet another case of self-important people trying to stop everyone else from having fun that they deem "offensive" while demanding that they be allowed to have the fun they want regardless of what anyone else thinks.

Really people. Please. At least try to hide your obvious bias and misinformed ignorance.
