The future is furry!

Inherit the Earth, a classic point-and-click adventure game set in the post-human times when animals take over, is available on GOG.com, for only $5.99

Is there a place for humankind in Earth's future? Many would argue that the planet is ours and we will inhabit it for as long as it can nurture life. This might not be the case. In this amazing story, humans are but the stuff of legends, a thing of the past long gone. Animals are the new rulers and they starting to resemble us in many ways, taking on our merits and flaws as a species. There is much uncertainty about the fate of humans and the origins of the animals civilization, and there are many secrets to uncover. One unwilling adventurer will face all the mysteries he wouldn't even dream of as his quest to clear his good name takes him on an unexpected journey.

Inherit the Earth tells an intriguing story of mystery and magic by the means of classic point-and-click adventure gameplay. It sports excellent pixel-art graphics that makes the future world vivid and the anthropomorphic characters believable. The quest that lies before Rif of the Fox Tribe, our main protagonist, is involving and it will keep you entertained down to the last click. If you enjoy point-and-click adventures of the 1990s, make sure not to miss this original little gem.

Venture into the woodland future and witness the adventure of our furry descendants in Inherit the Earth, for only $5.99.
I remember this game and it's mediocre at best. It was meant to be first part of a series and ends with a cliffhanger the moment you would expect the adventure really to begin. Story sounds interesting, but isn't, because they didn't use the potential that was there.

Might pick it up in a sale out of nostalgic feelings, but there are many better adventure games out there.

langurmonkey: But why not just make all the characters, humans instead of animals? I don't understand making all the characters animals if they aren't animal like but human like..
Well, why not make all characters in Star Trek, humans instead of aliens? They aren't any more "alien like" than characters in fables are "animal like". Basically, as a writer in such a setting, you're using the species of the characters as a tool to create an interesting setting, mixing some familiar and (hopefully) some original tropes.

I'm not quite sure I understood what you meant though. How would a story with "animal like" characters work? They can't talk, so dialog is out. Their relations are very limited (predator/prey, part of a herd ...) and never change, so there's little room for character development. Their goals are even more limited (getting food, producing offspring), so which kind of story with "actual animal-like characters" would you tell?

Can anyone from GOG confirm that it's not possible to run the game in a true, fully scaled fullscreen mode without the window frame or huge black borders?
So it looks in windows mode. Right colors, but a very small window size. If you choose fullscreen, the screen seems to be a little bigger, but far away from real fitting the screen and in my case the colors don't scale properly.
Interesting title, never heard of the game.

The most helpful review reveals that game ends in cliffhanger, which is a shame, but I´ll buy it anyway.
Hope somebody might do a remake or finish the story. I hate unfinished stories.

Does it use ScummVM to play?

Edit: ooops it's already been answered. Reading fail!

No, seems to be an "optimized" windows port, similar to the GOLD version of Wizardry. ScummVM doesn't recognize any files from this version.

right-click 'itewin.exe' and under compatibility tab check 'run in 640x480'
That should fix small window problem in fullscreen

Oh, right, was wondering what you meant. Seems to be similar to the Lucasarts adventure pack on Steam. That's such a shame.

There's more to animals than what you just said. And humans are predator/prey, part of a herd too. But I see now, due to the nature of humans, a story without humans wouldn't be so entertaining. What you say about the goals of animals is true. Their goals are very limited. Nature of animals is simply to live. So after, some thinking, with the help of your words, I understand now, why they made it so their game full of animal characters is a game full of human like animal characters.

Would love to know how this game plays. But......MY BLOODY INTERNET HAS BEEN ON THE FRITZ ALL DAY -- Almost an hour to download this game and it's still only 60 percent complete.

Kill me now :)
Isn't 6$ too much for this game?
Damn you, GOG! I know I'll buy it... and later this month I'll play Don't Starve. In real life.
Yay! A classic magical adventure. Great release!

But it would be even more great if GoG would add a ScummVM compatible version. Because in principle this game is compatible to ScummVM (and you even can get better music). Here's the ScummVM entry about the game: http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Inherit_The_Earth

For a game that's impossible to find and that probably took a fair bit of work on GOG's part to get it working on all the operating systems it will now work on?

No....probably not :)

LOL. I know the feeling.

I had $7.22 in my bank account. I now have $1.23.

Ah well, I do live in Thailand. It's amazing how much food you can buy for a dollar and packets of dried noodles are very cheap :)

Thanks for your advice, but this fixes only the size problem, but not the color scaling. I've tried the usually other options (running in 256 colors, disable desktop themes etc.), but no one works. It would be a great thing if we could get the original dos cd release from the game as an additional content.
