Just how they used to make them.

Eschalon Book I, an old-school RPG with open world, isometric graphics, and classic gameplay mechanics, is available 50% off on GOG.com. That's only $2.99 for the first week!

If you're an old-time computer role-playing fan, the chances are that you said the following at least once in your life: "They don't make cRPGs as they used to, nowadays". For the better part, you would be correct. Most of the modern role-playing games don't look nor play like their classic predecessors. It doesn't necessarily mean they're not as good, but they are--well--different. For all gamers disappointed by that state of things, here's a title custom-tailored to their nostalgic needs!

Eschalon Book I was developed by people who are old-time hardcore computer role-players themselves, and you can see it in every aspect of their brilliant game. With classic isometric graphics, traditional gameplay mechanics, a large open-ended world, tons of quests, and randomly generated loot, this game is everything you need to get into that nostalgic mood only a fantasy adventure can induce. Highly recommended to all cRPG gamers!

Prepare for a truly old-school and satisfying cRPG experience with Eschalon Book I, for only $2.99! That's 50% off the regular price until Tuesday, May 14, at 9:59AM GMT.
Here is a nice walkthrough I found for the game for those who are not really into downloading the demo (like me) but wanted to see what the game was all about.

The walkthrough is nicely done in the sense it is very straightforward and slow and detailed with the character creation and pretty much down to business. So check it out and you can get a good impression of the game.

shadesofdeath320: I tried playing this a while back, but kept running into the save game corruption bug it had. Any word on whether that was fixed? This was a year or so ago, and I'd like to try again sans steam.
First time I've heard of a save game corruption issue. Was this only with the Steam version? I got both games directly from Basilisk and had no issues with save games at all (even when I transferred saves from one machine to another).

I'm not sure. I found some old forum replies about this a while back, which can probably still be googled, but all they said were the problem would be fixed. The pages were from 2008, so they didn't really help me.

It might be possible that it was a problem with the steam version.
Nice Release GOG thanks! :D

keeveek: Good games for a good prices. But I would prefer Siege of Avalon, if you asked me.
That gets my vote too. Siege of Avalon is one of my favorite games. For some strange reason I find myself still loading it up every year. And it has continued to be patched (unofficially) and still works great for me.
I got the Patches here for those lucky enough to have the game, and who feel Siege fever:

I wonder if there's anybody in the Avalon dev team to be interested in selling this one. I tried to contact them not so long ago, but it was a dead end.

If there is a way I hope GOG will find it. It would be the perfect addition here I think. I know I'd get it again, and no doubt give the gift of Avalon to others if possible too. Oh Oh, I'm beginning to feel Siege Fever coming over me.
"I'm coming for you Sha'ahoul pig-dogs!" :D
If your like me and don't fancy the fallout series, try this game. In my opinion its much better as I prefer fantasy any day of the week. There's also much more replayability with stats/skills combinations. There are at least 1000 builds in each of the games.

Ive completed Book 1 and am currently on book 2.

Next up is The Quest which is the only game similar to Eschalon. Hopefully gog will realize what a great opportunity that is. Might and Magic fans will love that one.

Bloodygoodgames: Interestingly, PCGamer puts Eschalon Book III on their "Best PC Games of 2013" list.

Yep - these are all going to be must haves for me :)
Lol, this is one of like 30 RPG's on that list. How many more RPGs are actually getting released in 2013?

They're still around? I remember there was a website that wasn't working...

Edit: I thought GOG rejected The Quest?

BadDecissions: If you have a world where some humans can destroy entire cities with a spoken word, or bring the dead back to life, and you have dragons and all manner of other super-powerful beings ... if someone claims to be a god, how would you know? The gods in D&D, for example, aren't omnipotent or omni-anything. There are stronger gods and weaker gods and sometimes they kill each other, so they aren't even properly immortal; and for beings of indescribable wisdom, their feuds and fights and disagreements certainly do seem like the same feuds and fights and disagreements that poor, foolish mortals have. What's the difference between being a god, and just being a really powerful mortal? Is there one?

I think you could definitely play with atheism in a fantasy setting by considering questions like that. Not saying that Eschalon does, but it could.
To me it's rather simple, I prefer to call an entity only God if he fulfills these three requirements:
Limitless
Truly immortal
Non-intervention

Of course he can choose to intervene but why bother? He has no limits, he can see the future and knows what's going to happen. Then again an entity like that isn't truly alive, it's more like a force or law with a seemingly personification of a living being but in actuality isn't (debateable). A good example of this type is Eru Ilúvatar from LOTR and Aonir from the SpellForce series.

The rest are just higher up on the food chain, they can die, they've personal agendas, limits etc..

I have The Quest my iPhone and it is absolutely amazing. If it ever hit GOG it would be an instabuy for me.

Vote this link for 9th dawn. A ultima inspired game that is in real time. Its a single character type game like eschalon, the quest and what not and is trying to get on steam. Vote yes to get on steam.
*sigh*

Some developers appear to confuse "old-school" with "should look shitty". I don't like to judge the book by the cover, but this series has a lot to prove from its screenshots. And no, I'm not looking for 3D, I'd be perfectly comfortable with Fallout 1-grade graphics, or DOS-grade graphics for that matter. But even DOS games had to look good for its time.
