Just how they used to make them.

Eschalon Book I, an old-school RPG with open world, isometric graphics, and classic gameplay mechanics, is available 50% off on GOG.com. That's only $2.99 for the first week!

If you're an old-time computer role-playing fan, the chances are that you said the following at least once in your life: "They don't make cRPGs as they used to, nowadays". For the better part, you would be correct. Most of the modern role-playing games don't look nor play like their classic predecessors. It doesn't necessarily mean they're not as good, but they are--well--different. For all gamers disappointed by that state of things, here's a title custom-tailored to their nostalgic needs!

Eschalon Book I was developed by people who are old-time hardcore computer role-players themselves, and you can see it in every aspect of their brilliant game. With classic isometric graphics, traditional gameplay mechanics, a large open-ended world, tons of quests, and randomly generated loot, this game is everything you need to get into that nostalgic mood only a fantasy adventure can induce. Highly recommended to all cRPG gamers!

Prepare for a truly old-school and satisfying cRPG experience with Eschalon Book I, for only $2.99! That's 50% off the regular price until Tuesday, May 14, at 9:59AM GMT.

tinyE: I just played the demo and it reminds me of Geneforge A LOT, which is a good thing. What confuses me is that is seems so primitive for a game from '06. I'm not upset mind you because my pc is archaic but I was a little caught off guard by that. I'm going to go ahead and look for a EB2 demo. Normally I wouldn't bother given it's 2010 release but if it's as 'retro' as #1 might as well see.

Mephe: Well, Book 2 is quite a bit more polished than Book 1 and has some nice improvements and new features, but graphically it's about the same. Both are worth playing through though.
Played both demos. Bought #1, in the gift thread begging for #2. :P It will be a nice diversion from the manic Settllers 3 binge I've been on being able to only have to concentrate on one character at one place at one time.

Book I has a windowed resolution of 800x600, Book II has 1024x768, but yeah apart from showing more of the map the graphics are the same
I always thought these games were by Spiderweb. Live and learn. Interesting that they're at different price points.

+1 to you.

Kunovski: if you choose "atheist" as your belief while creating your character, and when you come across a creature that tries to cast "curse" on you, the game just notes "you don't believe in curses so it does no harm to you" :D
OMG, you can be atheist?? That is so awesome! I'm definitely going to...

coldalarm: If, like me, you have a thing about having to play female characters...

Skip this. Go straight to Book II, which adds the choice.
...you can't be female? Is this YET ANOTHER game where you're locked into playing a hetero white male? Can you choose skin color at least?

*sigh*

When I played the demo I was a little pissed about the lack if gender choice and portraits but on the game screen your guy looks the same either way so no biggie. NWN this isn't. :D

Of course, I still haven't bought them so maybe subconciously it IS A BIG DEAL! AHHHH!!!!

It's also worth noting that you don't natively get an automap in these games, you either need to take Cartography skill at the start, or buy a map from a vendor
Why does the argument "It's only $2.99" trump "I already have too many games, including at least 10 cRPGs"? Damn you, higher reasoning!

tinyE: I like you Phish, really, but you can be such a dickhead sometimes.
Yeah, I know, it's just that this is the sort of thing most people I know would just shrug off, after all the term "classical game" is relative anyway, some people would call games from three years ago old. After all, one day GoG will run out of DOS and Windows 95 games anyway, so what's the point of nailing the term to a certain period? I know some people will perceive me as a dickhead, but I'm just being honest instead of sugarcoating words. I'm not trying to insult anyone. It reminds me of this TotalBiscuit video, some people really are over-obsessed with nicety.

Maybe it's not big deal but it's always nice when you can create your own avatar.

At least lack of that option make Me sad (I can understand thing with gender, but not even portraits? :(), but it's not like I will be able to get it anytime soon so I will stick with "no biggie"... :)

I dig your honesty and I appreciate your candor. So long as you don't change that I really don't care what people call you, you're aces here. Even though sometimes I think you are totally wrong. :D
I miss Tuesdays.
IMO, this is an awesome release. I picked up both of these games from the developer at full price and thought they were both more than worth the price. At the sale price they're offered here... I may just buy them again just to have them in my GOG library. Looking forward to the release of Book III.
