It was said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried. --Sir Winston Churchill

Democracy 3, a robust simulation of society and politics that puts you in charge of a realistic virtual country and challenges you with maintaining peace, prosperity, and progress, is available on GOG.com for $24.99.

Somehow, political strategy games that give you leadership over a nation play out in fictional realms or ages long passed. You think medieval politics are tough? They don't even compare to modern time politics, where the generally obedient subjects have been replaced with ever-angry voters. That's democracy for you. Democracy 3, to be precise. In this multi-layered political sim you're tasked with running a country full of dynamically simulated voters whose needs, likes, and dislikes you'll need to deal with. With raging recession, unrestrained unemployment, catastrophical crime rate, and even creeping climate change, your virtual office will have their hands full 24/7! This is easily the most complex political strategy game ever made, with almost all the factors that actual governments should take into account in their actions. Your job will be a bit easier here, though, as you'll have all the actual data on your nation's condition, not just opinion polls to go by. This is a gaming experience that'll make you appreciate those in charge a bit more--or hate them with greater passion!

Find out if you have what it takes to govern a modern society in the complex and realistic virtual environment, where your revolutionary political ideas can't really hurt anyone. Get Democracy 3, for only $24.99 on GOG.com!

NOTICE: The DRM-free Mac OS X version of the game is on its way to GOG.com, and should be up for download soon
As for me, I don't care a fig for games like this one BUT... Is it a sign of hope that we could see here on GOG the most glorious Positech Games title? Of course, I mean Gratuitous Space Battles (Complete Pack)? ;)
Still haven't gotten around to playing Democracy 2 that I picked up in a bundle a while back, so no point in splashing out on this one right now until I see if the mechanics are appealing to me. It probably doesn't help this game that I like the other two releases today better, and can get them combined for almost half the price.

triock: Nice, how about Democracy 1+2?
Question is, do you need Democracy 1+2? Story-less games like this tend to render the previous versions obsolete outside of the realm of nostalgia.

(I should mention I've never played Democracy 1 and only played Democracy 2 briefly, so I can't say if there are substantial differences that warrant playing all three games).

Well, I'm also a game collector, so I would like to have full series. ;)
I wonder with a game like this.

Can it model the role of money in politics the whole 'corporations are people' billionares can spend unlimited amounts issues versus fixing the issue of money?

Can it really model the effect of good tv ads paid for with that money?

Can It really measure the irrational and rational voter behaviors such as the nuts crazy opposing Obamacare versus those who want to improve healthcare?

Can it portray someone like a Ted Cruz gumming up the works? Issues like abusing the filibuster or threatening the debt limit as a power grab?

It wouldn't be easy - or necessarily fun or a good game - to try to have those important factors.

Games are likely to try to be more 'rational' and simple giving the player a few options, none of which are all that great for 'winning the game' to keep it 'balanced'. But elections and power often don't seem decided on those things.

How can it model the distortions fed to the public by 'think tanks' that put out propaganda to sell people on policies that are bad for them, paid for by special interests?

Starmaker: Are there elections, or is it like Civ, with a permanent ruler?

teshra: On a similar note, can the government be shutdown and will we see petty bickering back and forth like in a true democracy?
I see what you did there!
I'm glad to see Positech added here! I'm still working through Democracy 2/Kudos (via Humble) and am not sure I'll get this at this time. Demo2, I found, far too finicky/difficult (read as: micro) even on the first scenario.
Yikes. I enjoy a good reality sim now and then, but this looks like something that would be utilized in a classroom. I'll be curious to see what other GOGgers say in their reviews.

EDIT: Rock, Paper, Shotgun says (about a pre-release version): "What I’m saying is that it hangs together very well: deep and detailed, researched and pitiless, but loaded with enough consequence and meaning to lift it into something much more than a numbers game. It’s very much a roleplaying game, as much about the curse of power as the strategic practicalities of running a vast business."

Wow. Now, I'm intrigued.

I wonder if this is fun or boring. Need to find some thorough reviews.
Doesn't really look like my cup of tea, passing on this one for now
This looks interesting. I was tempted to impulse-buy it until I saw the price.
I was interested until I saw those screenshots. One of them has implied hand holding. Can you believe this filth?

Kidding of course, but nah it doesn't seem like my kinda game. Modern day politics don't interest me.
So it seems democracy is more expensive than autocracy today. Piracy seems to be the best deal of all.
Pass.
