Dark mysteries of the Irish shores.
Montague's Mount, a chilling trip to a dark Irish coastal island in search of your memories, sanity, and meaning, is available for pre-order 10% off on GOG.com. That's only $8.99, until the game is released on Wednesday, October 9.
Montague's Mount is an atmospheric first-person perspective horror game, that draws its thrills not from cheap tricks but ambiance and narrative. If you played Dear Esther and thought it could use some traditional narrative and more interactivity, here's what you bargained for. The game presents an intriguing and haunting narrative through the protagonist's comments (voiced by Derek Riddell), notes, and pieces of text. It's worth noting, that Montague's Mount might be the first game to extensively use the Gaeilge language, native to Ireland. With lots of intriguing puzzles, immersive gameplay, and chilling atmosphere, this title is a must have for all mystery and horror fans. The game supports English, French, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian, and Portuguese, and runs on both Windows and Mac OS X.
Let the dark and damp atmosphere of the Irish coastal countryside overwhelm and mystify you in Montague's Mount. Preorder the game now, for only $8.99. The 10% off discount offer lasts until the game is released, on Wednesday, October 8.
There was an Indiegogo campaign for Montague's Mount's Episode 1 about a year ago. According to that campaign, the complete game would consists of three episodes.
So, is today's release only Episode 1 or was the whole episodic planning dropped in the meantime?

sebarnolds: Where are the extras ?
Not a big surprise, the dev had the extras at the $60 tier in his Indiegogo campaign. At least there's no Digital Deluxe edition.
This kinda interests me....whereas Dear Ester didnt....
This actually looks quite cool to me. I'm in the camp of waiting until it actually comes out, though. I can spare the dollar for peace of mind.

I can see why there would be comparisons to Dear Esther, but what this actually made me think of was a game I loved called Barrow Hill.

Then they should be more clear about the episodic nature of the game.

About the extras, it makes sense when it comes to crowd-funding but they should offer some extras anyway (wallpaper, manual, a few songs from the soundtrack... anything really).
Eh, episodic is it? Will not bother until the full series is out then. I associate GOG more with great games with an illustrious past than new games with an unknown future.
GOG usually don't release until they have the full game.

It's the latter. This is the full game.

Thanks for the clarification. More likely to buy if I know it's not going to be abandoned by the devs halfway, or languish in development limbo.
"What's cool" about the game is that it is "the first game to explore and promote the Irish language." That's an ... interesting choice of things to latch onto for marketing.

(I'm just teasing though, this looks like exactly the sort of thing I'd like.)
Looks kind of interesting, but I'll wait for a few reviews before purchasing it. I did this with Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs and it proved to be the best decision, as that game was a huge letdown.
Now this looks interesting... Have anybody been following it and knows a little more (like, if it's worth the money)?
I'm interested to see how this compares to Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Given what I saw of the trailer, it looks like similar mechanics.
I hope this game isn't like Amnesia.

Ever since that game came out Horror has been overrun by the idea that can't fight = scary. Its turned survival horror into hiding simulators. I haven't played A Machine for Pigs but I was surprised to see so many sad at the loss of the sanity meter. Being told you will loose points if you stay in the dark is scary, it's just an annoying distraction.

A good horror game doesn't get you with cheap restrictions, it does it though story and atmosphere. This does look like a real time version of the Dark Fall games. I liked those games. They didn't need invincible enemies to be scary.

I hope for the best.

Not sure what to think of this line. If you came away from Dear Esther thinking it could use a story, that must have been something, because Dear Esther is nothing but story, even if presumably you and certainly I didn't like that story or how it was told. Without what meagre story it has, it'd just be a two hour gap in your life you have trouble explaining to the family when you wake up at your computer with an irrational hatred for Source mods. So I guess what I"m saying is that I'm not really sure how "It's not nothing" really recommends Montague's Mount. They're... both... first person?

I don't know if you can really blame Amnesia for this. To use your own phrasing: ever since Resident Evil 4 came out, Horror has been overrun with fans insisting that "can barely fight = scary" (the "survival horror is supposed to be about survival!" crowd) and they found their saviour in a game that decided to toss the idea of fighting entirely. That seems to be the long and short of it, really.
