http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/03/21/notch-wants-to-make-a-firefly-inspired-sandbox-space-game-like-elite-except-done-right/
After stepping back as lead designer of Minecraft earlier this year, Notch has been considering what to do next. Right now he’s working on a little roguelike called MiniTale, but he has bigger plans for the summer. While he’s still deciding exactly what he wants to work on, he told us that he’d quite like to do a sandbox space trading game like Elite, “except done right.”

Notch is aiming for something with a bit more character than the classic trading sim. Instead of being the spaceship, you’d be a character inside the spaceship. “I want the space game that’s more like Firefly,” he said. “I want to run around on my ship and have to put out a fire. Like, oh crap, the cooling system failed, I have to put out the fire here.”

“The goal is to do it the same way I did Minecraft,” he added. “Just basically have me work on it for a while, and then we’ll add people as needed, and try to charge as soon as possible, because it’s probably going to be open ended sandbox game as well, so it doesn’t need to be completed before people can play it.”

He hasn’t decided to make the game yet, and doesn’t mind if someone else takes up the reins. “if someone steals the idea before me, that’s totally fine. I just want to play that game,” he said.

A sandbox space trading game that crosses Elite with Firefly. Sounds good, no?
When I played Elite and Frontier as a kid (and I still go back to Frontier) I couldn't help but wish that I could walk around my ship and fix it in real-time, and even walk around on the planets and in the space stations that I docked at and engage and trade with characters personally. We're certainly at a point where algorithmically generated cities and maps that look organic are possible, so I'm curious what Notch has to offer, even if he does seem a bit full of shit these days.

I loved Elite and Frontier too - this sounds like a great idea (as I also love the Firefly universe style) I'll be excited when I see it but we've been waiting for 'Elite 4' forever too so I'll not get excited based on "I'd like to make this kind of game" ...

That's a good policy.

I have to constantly struggle with my urge to make everything perfect from the get go and sometimes find that I get sidetracked by details that are nice, but not vital.

Hopefully, I'll have mastered that skill by the time I retire ><.
Notch and Elite/Firefly. Will be interesting. Will he use the Blue Danube as the docking music as in the original Elite? hahaha
Why not, i'd love play something like that. I'm glad that some indies sometimes make something that's not a NES inspired game [sadly, i can't stand 90% of those].;)

My entire life in a nutshell. Though, it's "always" not "sometimes".;/
This is a genre that has been terribly neglected. I will keep this on the radar...
Notch is becoming a game celebrity. Every week he says about a different game he wants to make/fund. First there was Psychonauts 2, then Dungeon Keeper 3, now this. And I probably probably missed few others. Would be nice if he actually started some of the projects he keeps talking about rather than just... well... talking.

Uhm... Let him talk as much as he want?!? We're talking as well and no one is telling us to stop talking and to start doing something... Stop seeing Notch as a company. He isn't. Not everything he says is official business stuff. He's just a normal internet guy, tweeting and blogging about things he's thinking about. Just like we do...

We start threads about "Which 5.99 game should I play next?", whereas Notch is posting things like "Which game should I support?" or "What kind of game could I write?". The only difference: No one cares for our threads, blogs and tweets. But if you're Notch, every magazine will write a news article about your tweets...

so I'm curious what Notch has to offer, even if he does seem a bit full of shit these days.
Notch seems like a nice guy who has gotten a bit carried away by the adulation and the way a large group of people hang on his every word. I wouldn't be surprised if he feels that he HAS to say these things to keep THEM amused.

Also, try Evochron if you want to play something similar to Elite. There are demos. Google Evochron Mercenary for the latest one. Or X3 series if you want to be an industrialist rather than a trader.
Notch is just a regular guy and he chats about regular things like we all do. Heck we've all expressed desire to have new games or remakes we'd love to see and I'm sure those of us who code (pro or hobby) express desires to work on certain projects.

It's just that when Notch says it he's "rich" and thus people expect that 5 seconds after he says "Hey I've love to work on 'insert super awesome thing here'" the internet explodes into "NOTCH is making Chuck Noris God game!"

Partly because of overexcited fans and partly because reporters basically are going to twitter and sourcing that as definitive proof.

In the end I get the feeling Notch isn't really out for the publicity, it just kind of happens without his expecting it (even if its only within the niche market of gamers). In time he might end up learning not to say certain thing on his "notch" account and using another for lighter hearted comments

All that said I've always had a fond spot for the X series of games and a Firefly inspired X (sorry I'm not old enough to be Elite generation ;)) game would be outstanding fun. The idea is very solid though it would be interesting which way he takes it.
X has always been very much an empire builder, individual ships have limited scope for upgrades and personalisation because you're expected to end up building large empires of trading stations and fleets.
Whereas , at least in my mind, the attraction to a Firefly inspired game would promote far more customisation and interaction with a single ship or small fleet. You wouldn't be expected to raise a whole army and thus you'd have far more options for tweaking the ships stats, appearances and far more exploration scope.

EDIT - if its official firefly Notch will have to make sure there is some awesome music in the game - cause there won't be space pewpew sounds!!

For some reason, I thought "Star Trek Elite Force" when I read Elite. If he started working on a Firefly-inspired first-person action/shooter/adventure game... that would be awesome.

Either way, if he has good ideas then I am glad to see him have the ability to put them into action.
BTW Firefly in X3:

Another kickstarter for me to throw money at?
